Retrograde planets in your birth chart: at your own pace
Most people are born with at least one planet that seemed to move backward that day. Here is what that means, and what it does not.

In short
- A retrograde planet in your birth chart appeared to move backward through the zodiac, seen from Earth, on the day you were born.
- No planet really reverses: the effect arises when Earth and another planet pass each other on their orbits.
- Most charts contain at least one retrograde planet. About every fifth or sixth person has Mercury retrograde, while Venus and Mars retrograde are rarer.
- Astrologers read a retrograde planet as turned inward, working at its own pace, and not as a flaw.

A retrograde planet in your birth chart is a planet that appeared to move backward through the zodiac, seen from Earth, on the day you were born. No planet really reverses. It is an effect of perspective. Astrologers read a retrograde planet as turned inward: its theme works more quietly and at your own pace. It is common, and it is not a flaw.
What retrograde means astronomically
All planets circle the Sun in the same direction, each at its own speed. Seen from the moving Earth, a planet normally drifts forward through the zodiac. At regular intervals it seems to slow down, stand still, drift backward for weeks or months, stand still again and move on. That backward stretch is the retrograde period.
You know the effect from the highway. When you pass a slower car, it seems to slide backward against the landscape, although both of you are driving forward.
- Mercury and Venus orbit inside the Earth's orbit and are faster than Earth. They appear retrograde when they pass between Earth and the Sun.
- Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto orbit outside it and are slower. They appear retrograde when the Earth overtakes them on the inside track.
The Sun and the Moon are never retrograde.
How common retrograde planets are in a birth chart
How often a planet is retrograde decides how many people are born with it.
| Planet | Retrograde | For | Share of the time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury | about three times a year | about three weeks | roughly 19 percent |
| Venus | about every 18 months | about six weeks | about 7 percent |
| Mars | about every 26 months | about ten to eleven weeks | about 9 percent |
| Jupiter and Saturn | once a year | about four to four and a half months | around a third |
| Uranus, Neptune and Pluto | once a year | about five months | about 40 percent |
Three things follow from the table.
- About every fifth or sixth person is born with Mercury retrograde.
- Venus and Mars retrograde are the rare ones. Astrologers give them more attention for that reason.
- The slow planets are retrograde so often that most charts contain at least one retrograde planet, and two or three are common. A chart with none is just as normal.

The basic idea: the planet's theme turns inward first. You work it out on your own before you show it, you take your own route, and you often come back to it a second time. Many astrologers sum it up in words that begin with re: rethink, review, revise.
- Mercury retrograde (thinking, learning, talking): you tend to think before you speak and to learn in your own order. Writing often suits you better than improvising.
- Venus retrograde (love, taste, values): affection is felt deeply and shown carefully. Your taste and your idea of a good relationship are your own and may take time to find.
- Mars retrograde (drive, anger, pursuit): energy builds on the inside. You take a run-up, anger tends to arrive late, and you prefer your own strategy to a head-on charge.
- Jupiter retrograde (growth, confidence): confidence comes from your own convictions more than from applause.
- Saturn retrograde (discipline, responsibility): the strictest standards are the ones you set yourself.
- Uranus, Neptune and Pluto retrograde: shared with a large part of your age group and rarely read personally. More on the generational planets.
An example: two people have Mercury in Gemini, and both think fast. One talks in order to think. The other, with Mercury retrograde, thinks first and talks afterward.
A retrograde planet is not broken. It does its work on the inside first.
The sign keeps its meaning. A retrograde Mars in Leo is still a Mars in Leo, proud and warm. It simply takes longer to show.
Is it bad to be born with Mercury retrograde?
No. The worry comes from the reputation of Mercury retrograde as a passing period: the roughly three weeks that astrologers read as a time to double-check messages and plans. Mercury retrograde in 2027 explains those periods. A birth chart is something else. It describes a lasting tendency, not a three-week phase.
People born with Mercury retrograde are read as thinkers who take the long way around and understand a subject thoroughly, because they do not settle for the first version. That says nothing about intelligence and predicts nothing about school or work.
What a retrograde planet does not mean:
- It is not weaker or damaged.
- It is not a punishment or a debt.
- It does not turn the sign into its opposite.
How to find the retrograde planets in your chart
A calculated birth chart usually marks each retrograde planet with a small R next to its symbol. Your date of birth is enough. The birth time matters only on a day when a planet turns.
An example from the calendar: Mercury is retrograde from February 9 to March 3, 2027, Mars from January 10 to April 1, 2027, and Jupiter from the start of the year until mid-April 2027. Anyone born on February 20, 2027 has all three retrograde. Dates are given in Universal Time and can shift by a day depending on where you live.
You can also see it in the wheel. A retrograde Mars, Jupiter or Saturn always stands in the half of the chart opposite the Sun, because that is where the Earth overtakes it. A retrograde Mercury or Venus stands close to the Sun.
If a planet stood still on the day you were born, just before or after turning, it is called stationary. Astrologers read its theme as especially marked.
What to do with your retrograde planets
- Look for the small R in your chart and note which planets carry it.
- Read the line for each one. Ask where you need more time than others, and whether that has also been an advantage.
- Read the planet in context. Its sign and house say more than the R. How to read a birth chart step by step
The basis is your chart as a whole. A Birth Chart Reading describes it, calculated from your exact birth data and written for your chart.
Questions, answered
What does a retrograde planet in my birth chart mean?
It means the planet appeared to move backward, seen from Earth, when you were born. Astrologers read its theme as turned inward: you work it out on your own first and at your own pace.
Is it bad to be born during Mercury retrograde?
No. About every fifth or sixth person is. It is read as a reflective way of thinking and learning, and it says nothing about intelligence or about what will happen in your life.
How many retrograde planets are normal in a birth chart?
Most charts have at least one, and two or three are common, because the slow planets are retrograde for months every year. A chart with no retrograde planet is just as normal.
How do I know if a planet is retrograde in my chart?
Most calculated charts mark retrograde planets with a small R next to the planet's symbol. Your date of birth is enough; the birth time only matters on a day when a planet turns.
