Uranus, Neptune and Pluto: the planets of your generation

The three slowest planets stay in one sign for years, so their signs describe an age group. Their houses describe you.

In short

  • Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are called the generational planets because they stay in one sign for many years.
  • Uranus spends about seven years in a sign, Neptune about 14, and Pluto between about 12 and more than 30.
  • Everyone born within a few years of you shares these three signs, so they describe an age group and not one person.
  • The house each of them stands in, and close aspects to your Sun, Moon or Rising point, are what make them personal.

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are called the generational planets because they move so slowly that everyone born within a few years of you has them in the same signs. Uranus spends about seven years in a sign, Neptune about 14, Pluto between about 12 and more than 30. Their signs describe your age group. The house each one stands in is what makes them personal.

Why everyone your age shares these signs

The farther a planet is from the Sun, the longer it takes to circle the zodiac. The Moon passes through a sign in about two and a half days, the Sun in about 30 days. The three outermost planets work on a different scale.

PlanetOne circuit of the zodiacTime in one signRead as
Uranus84 yearsabout seven yearschange, independence, the break with habit
Neptuneabout 165 yearsabout 14 yearsideals, imagination, what people long for
Plutoabout 248 yearsabout 12 to more than 30 yearsdeep change, power, what is taken apart and rebuilt

Pluto's time per sign varies so much because its orbit is strongly elliptical.

Someone born in 1990 has Uranus and Neptune in Capricorn and Pluto in Scorpio. So does nearly everyone who sat in the same classroom. That is why the sign of an outer planet says little about you personally. Astrologers read it as a shared background: the questions and tasks an age group grows up with.

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto signs by birth year

Find your birth year in each table. All years are approximate. A slow planet often enters a new sign, turns retrograde (appears to move backward, seen from Earth), slips back and enters for good months later. If you were born in a year where two rows meet, only a calculated chart shows which sign is yours. A slash marks a change spread over two years.

The house is what makes the generational planets personal

Houses are the twelve sections of a chart, each linked to an area of life. They begin at the Rising point, the degree of your Rising sign (also called the Ascendant), which moves through all twelve signs in 24 hours. So two people born on the same day share the sign of every outer planet and can still have them in different houses.

Two chart wheels with Pluto at the same place in the zodiac, in the fourth house on the left and in the tenth house on the right.
Same day, same sign, different birth time: Pluto in the fourth house on the left, in the tenth on the right.

Take Pluto in Scorpio. In the fourth house (home and roots), astrologers relate its theme of deep change to family and origins. In the tenth house (career and public role), they relate the same Pluto to work and reputation.

The sign of an outer planet describes your generation. Its house describes you.

An outer planet gets personal weight in two ways:

  • By house. The house shows where the shared theme lands in your life. What the twelve houses mean
  • In a close aspect. An aspect is an angle between two planets, such as 0, 90 or 180 degrees. Uranus on your Sun or Pluto opposite your Moon ties the slow theme to something personal. How aspects are read

Houses need a birth time. Without it, the signs in the tables above still hold.

Where Uranus, Neptune and Pluto stand from 2026 on

The three planets keep moving, and astrologers read the sign each one is in as a long background theme. Dates are given in Universal Time and can shift by a day depending on where you live.

  • Uranus is in Gemini for good from April 26, 2026. It enters Cancer in August 2032, goes back briefly, and is in Cancer for good from May 2033. More in Uranus in Gemini.
  • Neptune is in Aries for good from January 26, 2026. It enters Taurus in 2038/2039.
  • Pluto has been in Aquarius for good since November 20, 2024 and enters Pisces in 2043/2044. More in Pluto in Aquarius.

For your own chart the useful question is: which houses do Gemini, Aries and Aquarius cover?

Uranus returns to its birth position after 84 years. Neptune and Pluto never complete a full circuit within a human life.

What to do with your generational planets

  1. Look up your three signs. Read them as a portrait of your age group, and notice where you recognize it and where you do not.
  2. Find the houses. With a birth time, note which house each of the three stands in.
  3. Check whether one of them stands close to your Sun, your Moon or your Rising point.

If you would like the houses worked out for you, a Birth Chart Reading is calculated from your exact birth data and written for your chart.

Questions, answered

Why are Uranus, Neptune and Pluto called generational planets?

Because they move so slowly. Uranus needs 84 years for the zodiac, Neptune about 165 and Pluto about 248, so each stays in one sign for years and everyone born in that span shares it.

How do I find my Pluto sign?

In most cases your birth year is enough. People born around 1984 to 1995, for example, have Pluto in Scorpio. If you were born in a year when Pluto changed signs, you need a calculated chart.

Do the outer planets matter in my personal birth chart?

Yes, through their house and their aspects. The sign is shared with your whole age group, but the house depends on your birth time and shows the area of life where the theme is read for you.

Is Pluto still a planet in astrology?

Astronomers classify Pluto as a dwarf planet. Astrology continues to read it as one of the planets of a chart, because the symbolic language is built on its position, not on its size.

Astrology is a tool for self-reflection, not a science, and it does not replace medical, psychological, legal or financial advice.
