The dates are given in Universal Time and can shift by one day depending on where you live. Retrograde means that a planet appears to move backward, seen from Earth.

Venus is retrograde only about 7 percent of the time. That is less than any other planet: Mars is retrograde about 9 percent of the time, Mercury about 19 percent, and the planets from Jupiter outward about 40 percent. A whole calendar year without a Venus retrograde, like 2027, is nothing unusual.

What Venus retrograde actually is

Venus does not turn around. It circles the Sun inside the orbit of the Earth and needs 225 days for one round, while the Earth needs a year. Every 584 days Venus catches up with the Earth and passes between us and the Sun. While it overtakes us on the inside track, it seems to slide backward against the stars for about six weeks.

You can watch this happen. Before a retrograde, Venus is the bright evening star after sunset. During the retrograde it sinks toward the Sun and disappears in its light. Afterward it shows up on the other side, as the morning star before sunrise.

There is a pattern behind the dates. Five retrogrades take five times 584 days, which is almost exactly eight years. After eight years Venus turns retrograde in nearly the same part of the zodiac again. The five places are spread almost evenly around the circle, and if you join them in the order in which they happen, they draw a five-pointed star.

Five Venus retrogrades in eight years fall on five places of the zodiac. Joined in order, they draw a star.

What Venus retrograde means in astrology

In astrology, Venus stands for love and affection, for taste and pleasure, and for what you value, including what you gladly spend time and money on. What your Venus sign says about how you love

When Venus is retrograde, astrologers read these themes as turning back on themselves. The fitting words are reconsider, reconnect and re-evaluate. The examples astrologers give: someone from the past comes to mind, an old question about a relationship asks for a clearer answer, a thing you wanted badly looks different on second thought.

Typical Venus retrograde questions:

  • What do I really enjoy, and what do I only think I should enjoy?
  • What do I give in my relationships, and what do I ask for?
  • What is worth my time, and what is worth my money?

The signs add a direction. In 2026 Venus begins in Scorpio, a sign linked with depth and trust, and moves back into Libra, a sign linked with balance and fairness. Libra is one of the two signs that traditional astrology assigns to Venus, together with Taurus. Astrologers read this period as a review of what is fair between two people. In 2028 the whole retrograde is in Gemini, the sign of conversation, and is read as a second look at how you talk to each other.

What Venus retrograde does not mean

The popular rules are strict: do not begin a relationship, do not marry, do not buy anything beautiful, do not change your hair. If such lists have made you uneasy, that is understandable. They are everywhere.

Astrology as a tool for reflection knows no such rules. A retrograde causes neither breakups nor bad purchases. Couples meet, marry and stay together in every week of the calendar. A Venus retrograde takes up about six weeks out of every 584 days, and life does not pause for it.

What astrology also cannot do is tell you whom to love, whether to commit or what to buy. Those decisions belong to you.

Venus retrograde does not take love away. Astrologers read it as a second look at what you already love.

Who notices a Venus retrograde most

The dates are the same for everyone. Where they land is not. In your birth chart, the map of the sky for the minute and place you were born, the signs of a retrograde fall in particular houses. Houses are the twelve areas of life in a chart. They begin at your Rising sign, the sign on the eastern horizon at your birth, also called the Ascendant. The twelve houses and what they stand for

Three things make a period more personal in an astrologer's reading:

  • The house. With a Leo Rising and Whole Sign houses, where each house is one whole sign, Libra is the third house and Scorpio the fourth. The 2026 review is then read as moving from home and roots back to conversation and learning.
  • Your own planets. If your Sun, Moon or Venus stands in the stretch Venus goes back over, Venus passes it three times: forward, backward and forward again.
  • Your Venus sign. A retrograde in the sign of your own Venus is read as a review of your personal way of loving.

Some people were born while Venus was retrograde. Astrologers read that as affection that takes its time and shows itself in its own way, not as a flaw. Retrograde planets in a birth chart

What to do with a Venus retrograde

  1. Find your Venus sign. You need only your date of birth.
  2. Look up your Rising sign and find the houses that hold the signs of the retrograde. You need your birth time for this step.
  3. Pick one of the three questions above and give it the six weeks. Write down what changes in your answer.

If you would rather have it read for you, a Love Reading is written for your chart and describes how you love, calculated from your exact birth data.
