In short
- Mars is retrograde from January 10 to April 1, 2027. It appears to move backward from 10° Virgo to 21° Leo.
- Mars never really reverses. The Earth overtakes it on its faster inner orbit, about every 26 months.
- Astrologers read a Mars retrograde as a time to pace yourself and review where your effort goes, not as a ban on starting things.
- People with a planet or the Rising point between 21° Leo and 10° Virgo are read as noticing it most, because Mars crosses that stretch three times.

Mars retrograde 2027 dates
| Date | What Mars does |
|---|---|
| January 10, 2027 | Turns retrograde at 10° Virgo |
| February 21, 2027 | Moves back into Leo |

The dates are given in Universal Time. Depending on where you live, a date can shift by one day. "Retrograde" means that Mars appears to move backward, seen from Earth. "Turns direct" means that it appears to move forward again.
The retrograde lasts a little over eleven weeks. That is normal for Mars: it is retrograde about every 26 months, for about ten to eleven weeks. After 2027 the next Mars retrograde runs from around mid-February to early May 2029.
Two other planets share these weeks. Jupiter is retrograde in Leo at the start of 2027 and turns direct in mid-April at 17° Leo. Mercury is retrograde from February 9 to March 3, 2027. Mercury retrograde 2027: the dates and what to do
What Mars retrograde actually is
Mars does not turn around. It circles the Sun in the same direction all the time and needs about 1.9 years for one orbit. The Earth, on the inner track, needs one year. About every 26 months the Earth catches up with Mars and overtakes it.
Think of passing a slower car on the highway. Both cars drive forward. But while you pass, the other car seems to slide backward against the hills in the distance. In the same way, Mars seems to slide backward against the stars while the Earth passes it.
One detail is worth knowing. In the middle of a retrograde, Mars stands opposite the Sun and is closer to the Earth than at any other time in the cycle. It rises around sunset and shines at its brightest. The weeks in which Mars is said to go backward are the weeks in which it is easiest to see.
What Mars retrograde means in astrology
In astrology, Mars stands for drive: energy, anger, and how you go after what you want. When Mars is retrograde, astrologers read that drive as turned inward. The questions that fit are about effort: what am I pushing for, is it still what I want, and is my pace one I can keep up?
The popular version is louder: start nothing, expect quarrels. A retrograde does not cause either. Astrologers read these weeks in a calmer way:
- Review before you push. Look at what your energy goes into, and what you get back.
- Repair and finish. Go back to what was started in a hurry and do it properly.
- Mind your pace. Rest is read as part of the work, not as lost time.
- Listen to irritation. Anger is read as a signal: something matters to you. It is worth knowing what before you act on it.
- Go ahead when it matters. Nothing has to wait until April.
The two signs add a direction. Virgo is linked with work, craft and getting the details right. Leo is linked with the heart, with pride and with creative joy. Mars begins in Virgo and moves back into Leo, and astrologers read this as a step from the question of how you do something back to the question of why you do it.
Mars retrograde is not a stop sign. Astrologers read it as a pit stop: you check where your effort is going.

The dates are the same for everyone. Where they land is not. Mars crosses the stretch between 21° Leo and 10° Virgo three times: forward before January 10, backward during the retrograde, and forward again after April 1.
If one of your own planets or your Rising point stands in that stretch, Mars passes over it three times. Astrologers read that as a more personal period. For the Sun this concerns birthdays from around mid-August to the first days of September.
For everyone, the theme comes from the houses that Leo and Virgo cover in the birth chart. Houses are the twelve areas of life in a chart. They begin at your Rising sign, the sign on the eastern horizon at your birth, also called the Ascendant.
| Rising sign | Leo is your | Virgo is your |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 5th house | 6th house |
| Taurus | 4th house | 5th house |
| Gemini | 3rd house | 4th house |
| Cancer | 2nd house | 3rd house |
| Leo | 1st house | 2nd house |
| Virgo | 12th house | 1st house |
| Libra | 11th house | 12th house |
| Scorpio | 10th house | 11th house |
| Sagittarius | 9th house | 10th house |
| Capricorn | 8th house | 9th house |
| Aquarius | 7th house | 8th house |
| Pisces | 6th house | 7th house |
The table uses Whole Sign houses, where each house is one whole sign. In other house systems the border can lie elsewhere. With a Scorpio Rising, for example, the review is read as moving from friends and groups, the 11th house, back to career and public role, the 10th. The twelve houses and what they stand for
Some people were born while Mars was retrograde. That is less common than with the outer planets, because Mars is retrograde only about 9 percent of the time. Astrologers read it as drive that works on its own schedule, not as a flaw. Retrograde planets in a birth chart
