The dates are given in Universal Time. Depending on where you live, a date can shift by one day. "Retrograde" means that Mercury appears to move backward, seen from Earth. "Turns direct" means that it appears to move forward again.

In 2027 each period starts in a water sign and moves back into an air sign. Astrologers link water with feeling and air with thinking and talking. They read this as a year for finding words for what was first only felt.

What Mercury retrograde actually is

Mercury does not turn around. It circles the Sun in the same direction all the time, and it does so fast: one orbit takes about 88 days, while the Earth needs a year. About three times a year Mercury catches up with the Earth and passes between us and the Sun.

Think of a carousel you are watching from outside. The horses on the far side move from left to right. The ones on the near side pass you from right to left, although the carousel never changes direction. It is the same with Mercury. On the far side of the Sun it moves forward through the zodiac, as we see it. On the near side, while it passes between the Earth and the Sun, it seems to slide backward against the stars. Because the Earth is moving too, this backward stretch is short: about three weeks.

The orbits of Mercury and Earth around the Sun, with lines of sight that show Mercury's apparent backward loop.
Mercury overtakes the Earth on its inner orbit and seems to step backward for about three weeks.

Nothing about Mercury itself changes during a retrograde. What changes is the view from here. Astrology works with that view, because a birth chart is drawn as seen from the Earth, not from the Sun.

What Mercury retrograde means in astrology

In astrology, Mercury stands for how you think, learn, talk and make plans. It is also linked with everything that carries words and people from one place to another: messages, appointments, short trips.

When Mercury is retrograde, astrologers read it as a time when these things turn back on themselves. The words that fit all begin with "re": review, revise, re-check, return, reconnect. An old plan comes back to the table. A conversation that was left open gets finished. You reread what you wrote and see what is missing.

The popular version is louder: phones break, emails vanish, nothing should be signed. If you have felt uneasy before a Mercury retrograde, that is understandable, because this is the version most people hear. But a retrograde does not cause mishaps. Misunderstandings and late trains happen all year. During a retrograde people watch for them, so they notice more of them.

Mercury retrograde is not a time when things go wrong. It is a time when it pays to look twice.

What to do during Mercury retrograde

You do not need to put your life on hold for nine weeks of the year. A calmer way to use the three periods:

  • Re-check before you send. Read the message, the booking or the form once more. That is a good habit in any week.
  • Finish before you start. Use the time for drafts, edits and the things you meant to come back to.
  • Leave some slack. Plan a little extra time around trips and appointments, so that a delay stays a small thing.
  • Go ahead when it matters. If a decision or a date cannot wait, it does not have to. Take a little extra care and move on.

What astrology cannot do is tell you whether to sign, buy or commit. Those decisions belong to you and, where needed, to the people who advise you.

Why Mercury retrograde does not affect everyone the same way

The dates are the same for everyone. Where they land is not. Each period covers a specific stretch of the zodiac, in February for example from 6° Pisces back to 21° Aquarius.

In your birth chart, the map of the sky for the minute and place you were born, these degrees fall in particular houses. Houses are the twelve areas of life in a chart. For one person the February stretch falls in the third house of communication and learning, for another in the tenth house of career, for a third in the fourth house of home. Astrologers take the theme of the review from that house. The twelve houses and what they stand for

It also matters whether one of your own planets stands in that stretch. If your Sun, your Moon or your Mercury is at 2° Pisces, Mercury passes over it three times around the February period: forward, backward and forward again. Astrologers read that as a more personal period than for someone with nothing between those degrees.

Some people were born while Mercury was retrograde. That is common, because Mercury is retrograde for about nine weeks of every year. Astrologers read it as a careful, inward way of thinking, not as a flaw.

This is why the same three weeks can feel busy to one person and pass almost unnoticed for another.

Find where the 2027 retrogrades fall in your chart

  1. Look up your Rising sign, the sign on the eastern horizon at your birth, also called the Ascendant. It sets your houses, so you need your birth time for this step.
  2. Find the houses that hold late Aquarius and early Pisces, late Gemini and early Cancer, late Libra and early Scorpio.
  3. Note any planet of yours within those degrees.

That gives you three dated periods, each with its own area of life. If houses and degrees are new to you, start here: how to read a birth chart step by step. Questions, answered

When is Mercury retrograde in 2027?

Three times: from February 9 to March 3, from June 10 to July 4, and from October 7 to October 28, 2027. The dates are in Universal Time and can shift by one day depending on where you live.

How long does Mercury retrograde last?

About three weeks each time. In 2027 the three periods last between 21 and 24 days.

Does Mercury really move backward?

No. Mercury always travels in the same direction around the Sun. It only appears to move backward from Earth, when it passes between us and the Sun on its faster inner orbit.

Can I sign a contract or start something new during Mercury retrograde?

Yes. Astrology is a tool for reflection and does not decide this for you. Astrologers read the period as a reminder to read carefully and check the details, which is sensible at any time of year.

Astrology is a tool for self-reflection, not a science, and it does not replace medical, psychological, legal or financial advice.
