Stellium meaning: many planets, one place

Three or more planets in one sign or house give a chart a clear center of gravity, and it pays to count carefully before you call it a stellium.

In short

  • A stellium is a group of three or more planets in the same zodiac sign or the same house of a birth chart.
  • Astrologers read it as a point of focus: the themes of that sign or house take up a large share of your attention.
  • The Sun, Mercury and Venus always travel close together, so many astrologers ask for four planets when those three are part of the group.
  • A stellium is not a better chart, and the sign opposite it is read as its counterweight.

A stellium is a group of three or more planets in the same zodiac sign or the same house of a birth chart. Astrologers read it as a point of focus: the themes of that sign or house take up a large share of your attention and energy. Because the Sun, Mercury and Venus always travel close together, many astrologers ask for four planets when those three are involved.

What counts as a stellium

A birth chart places ten planets in twelve signs and twelve houses. Astrology counts the Sun and the Moon as planets, for simplicity. In most charts the ten are spread fairly widely. In a chart with a stellium, several of them sit in one spot.

There is no official rulebook, but most astrologers agree on three points.

  • Three or more planets. Three is the common minimum. Some astrologers only speak of a stellium from four.
  • One sign or one house. A sign is one of the twelve 30-degree sections of the zodiac. A house is one of the twelve sections of a chart that stand for areas of life, such as home, work or partnership.
  • Planets only. The ten bodies are the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Points such as the Rising sign (also called the Ascendant), the Midheaven and the lunar nodes are usually not counted.

A stellium in a sign and one in a house are different things. You can find the first from your date of birth. The second needs your birth time and place, because the houses begin at the Rising point. It also depends on the house system: a planet can change house from one system to another, but it never changes sign.

One more detail. Planets in the same sign are not necessarily side by side. A planet at 2 degrees and one at 28 degrees of the same sign are 26 degrees apart. Astrologers speak of a conjunction, one of the aspects in astrology, only when two planets stand within a few degrees of each other. A stellium whose planets are also conjunct is read as more tightly bundled.

Why the Sun, Mercury and Venus need careful counting

Mercury and Venus circle the Sun inside the orbit of the Earth. Seen from Earth, Mercury is never more than about 28 degrees away from the Sun, and Venus never more than about 47 degrees. A sign covers 30 degrees. So Mercury is always in your Sun sign or a neighboring sign, and Venus is at most two signs away.

Zodiac circle in which four planets stand together in one segment while the other six are spread singly around the circle.
A stellium: several planets in one sign. The Sun, Mercury and Venus are often neighbors, so it is the fourth planet that makes the group stand out.

These three share a sign in a great many charts, simply because of geometry. That is why many astrologers are stricter here: they ask for a fourth planet, such as the Moon or Mars, before they call it a stellium.

The slow planets need the same care. Saturn spends about two and a half years in one sign, Neptune about 14 years. From February 14, 2026 to April 12, 2028, both are in Aries. These dates are given in Universal Time and can shift by a day depending on where you live. Anyone born in that span while the Sun is also in Aries, around March 20 to April 19 or 20, has at least three planets in Aries.

A stellium that rests on slow planets is therefore shared with many people of the same age. The personal part lies in the fast planets and in the house.

How astrologers read a stellium

A stellium is read with three questions.

  1. Which sign? The sign gives the style. A stellium in Virgo tends to work through precision, care and usefulness, one in Sagittarius through curiosity, travel and big questions.
  2. Which house? The house gives the area of life where that style shows most clearly.
  3. Which planets? Each planet stands for a part of you: the Sun for identity, the Moon for feelings, Mercury for thinking, Venus for love and values, Mars for drive, Jupiter for growth, Saturn for discipline. A stellium of Moon, Venus and Jupiter reads warmer and softer than one of Sun, Mars and Saturn.

An example: Sun, Mercury, Mars and Jupiter in Sagittarius in the ninth house (travel, study, beliefs) describe a person whose identity, thinking, drive and optimism all point the same way, toward learning and wide horizons. The strength is focus. The cost is that other areas get less attention.

A stellium in each of the twelve houses

With a birth time you can see which area of life your stellium falls in.

HouseWhere the focus tends to lie
1Yourself: how you come across and how you start things.
2What you value, your resources and your sense of self-worth.
3Talking, writing, learning and the people around you every day.
4Home, family and roots.
5Creativity, play, romance and children.
6Daily work, routines and habits.
7Partnership and close one-to-one relationships.
8Intimacy, trust and what you share with others.
9Travel, study and beliefs.
10Career and your public role.
11Friends, groups and hopes for the future.
12Rest, retreat and the inner world.

What the twelve houses mean

Without a birth time you can still read the sign of your stellium. Only the house stays open.

What a stellium does not mean

  • Not a better chart. A chart without a stellium is just as complete. Planets spread over many signs are read as a wider range of interests.
  • Not a promise. A stellium describes where your attention tends to go. What you make of it is up to you.
  • Not the whole of you. The planets outside the stellium still count, above all the Moon and the Rising sign.

A stellium does not give you more than other people have. It puts more of what you have in one place.

Astrologers also look at the sign directly opposite the stellium. It is read as the counterweight. With a stellium in Aries, a sign that acts first and alone, the Libra qualities of listening and compromise are worth practicing on purpose.

What to do with your stellium

  1. Write down the signs of your ten planets and count. Three or more in one sign is a stellium. If they are the Sun, Mercury and Venus, look for a fourth.
  2. If you know your birth time, check the house and read its line in the table.
  3. Take the planets one by one and ask what each adds. Then look at the opposite sign and ask what it could balance.

If you would rather have it read for you, a Birth Chart Reading is written for your chart and calculated from your exact birth data.

Questions, answered

How many planets make a stellium?

Three is the common minimum, and some astrologers only speak of a stellium from four planets. If the group consists of the Sun, Mercury and Venus, many ask for a fourth planet, because those three stand close together in very many charts.

Does the Rising sign count toward a stellium?

Usually not. Most astrologers count only the ten planets, including the Sun and the Moon. Points such as the Rising sign, the Midheaven and the lunar nodes are left out.

What is the difference between a stellium in a sign and a stellium in a house?

A stellium in a sign describes a style that is emphasized, and you can find it from your date of birth. A stellium in a house describes an area of life that is emphasized, and it needs your birth time and place.

Is a stellium good or bad?

Neither. It describes concentration: a lot of attention in one place and less in others. Astrologers read it as a tendency, not as a promise of talent and not as a warning.
