Pisces is the twelfth and last sign of the zodiac. The Sun moves through it from around February 18 or 19 to around March 20. It is a mutable water sign, ruled by Jupiter in traditional astrology and by Neptune in modern astrology, and its core is empathy and imagination: Pisces takes in what other people feel, often before they have said a word.

Pisces traits: strengths and growth edges

The symbol of Pisces is two fish swimming in opposite directions, joined by a cord. Astrologers read it as a pull two ways: toward the world as it is, and toward the world as it could be imagined.

Water is the element astrologers read as feeling, closeness and memory. Mutable is one of the three modes, the ways a sign acts: mutable signs adapt and change direction easily. A ruler is the planet linked to a sign. Jupiter stands for growth and trust, Neptune for imagination and for whatever has no sharp outline. Together they make water that takes the shape of what holds it. That is the gift and the difficulty at once. How the four elements work

The Sun leaves Pisces at the March equinox, where the zodiac begins again with Aries. Astrologers read the last sign as one that carries a little of all the others, which is one reason Pisces is hard to pin down.

Pisces at its best

  • Quick to read people. It walks into the kitchen and knows there was an argument ten minutes ago.
  • Imaginative in a useful way. It finds the picture, the melody or the workaround nobody else thought of.
  • Kind without keeping score. It gives the benefit of the doubt and forgives sooner than most.

Where Pisces struggles

  • Where it ends and others begin. It comes home from a friend's bad day carrying it.
  • A no that sounds like maybe. It agrees so as not to disappoint, and then quietly does not turn up.
  • Drifting off. When life gets loud, it withdraws into sleep, a TV show or a daydream instead of having the conversation.

One habit tends to help: a regular hour with nobody's feelings in it but its own.

Read all of this as tendencies. When people say "my sign", they mean the Sun sign, the sign the Sun stood in at your birth. It is one part of a birth chart, which also holds the Moon, the planets and the Rising sign.

Pisces does not have thin skin. It has open windows, and whatever is in the room comes in.

Pisces in love

Pisces tends to love attentively. The gestures are small and exact: the note in your coat pocket, the song sent at midnight, the detail from a story you told once, remembered a year later.

It also merges easily. Within a few months it knows your music, your friends and your schedule, and it may have let go of some of its own. Closeness comes naturally. Keeping an outline takes practice.

  • What tends to feel easy: partners who are gentle and steady and who say plainly what they want, so that Pisces does not have to guess.
  • What takes more translation: partners who argue loudly to clear the air. Pisces tends to hear volume as alarm and goes quiet, and the other person takes the silence for agreement.

The growth edge in love is saying what it wants in one clear sentence, and telling the difference between loving a person and loving what they might become.

Pisces at work

The picture of the dreamy artist is too narrow. Pisces tends to do well wherever reading people matters, or imagining something that does not exist yet. That can be a studio or a classroom. It can just as well be a sales call: this is the colleague who knows the client is unhappy before the email arrives.

Its natural contributions are sensing the mood, finding unusual solutions and staying flexible.

What takes more effort: hard competition, rigid schedules and turning down an extra task. Deadlines work better with a face attached. "A colleague is waiting for this on Friday" moves Pisces more than "due Friday". It also helps to answer requests with "I will tell you tomorrow" and to decide alone.

The dates are given in Universal Time and can shift by a day depending on the year and on where you live. The Sun changes signs at a specific minute, so on a changeover day your birth time decides which sign it is. All zodiac sign dates, and what being born on the cusp means

Pisces in the zodiac: ruled by Jupiter (modern: Neptune), opposite Virgo, one of three water signs with Cancer and Scorpio.

Virgo, the opposite sign, shares a theme with Pisces: helping. Virgo helps by sorting out the detail and fixing it. Pisces helps by feeling with someone and taking in the whole.

Why two Pisces can be so different

The Sun stays in Pisces for about 30 days, so everyone born in that span shares the Sun sign. The rest of the chart moves at other speeds.

The Moon changes signs about every two and a half days. It describes your feelings and what you need to feel safe. A Pisces with the Moon in Capricorn has a gentle manner and a need for order and a plan. It keeps its feelings contained and has more ambition than people expect. What your Moon sign means

The Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, changes about every two hours. It describes how you come across. With Aries rising, a Pisces seems direct and fast, and the sensitive side shows only once you know them. How to find your Rising sign

What to do next with your Pisces Sun

  1. If you were born on a day when the Sun changes signs, check your Sun sign with your birth time.
  2. Find your Moon sign and your Rising sign, and notice where they agree with Pisces and where they pull another way.
  3. Look at Jupiter and Neptune in your chart. Neptune spends about 14 years in a sign, so you share its sign with everyone close to your age. Its house, the area of life it falls in, is the personal part.

Questions, answered

What are the dates for Pisces?

The Sun is in Pisces from around February 18 or 19 to around March 20. The exact day shifts by a day from year to year, so people born on a changeover day need their birth time to be sure.

What element and ruling planet does Pisces have?

Pisces is a water sign, like Cancer and Scorpio, and its mode is mutable. Traditional astrology gives it to Jupiter and modern astrology to Neptune, and many astrologers read both.

Are all Pisces dreamy and oversensitive?

No. Pisces tends to notice moods quickly and to think in pictures, which is a skill as much as a weak spot. How strongly it shows depends on the Moon sign, the Rising sign and the rest of the chart.

Which signs get along well with Pisces?

No sign is ruled out. The other water signs and the earth signs often feel easy at first, while fire and air signs can take more translation. Two whole charts say far more than two Sun signs.
