Aquarius is the eleventh sign of the zodiac. The Sun moves through it from around January 20 to around February 18. It is a fixed air sign, ruled by Saturn in traditional astrology and by Uranus in modern astrology, and its core is independent thinking for the sake of the group: Aquarius steps back from the crowd in order to see it clearly.
Aquarius traits: strengths and growth edges
The symbol of Aquarius is the Water Bearer, a figure pouring water from a jar. The name misleads many people: Aquarius is an air sign, not a water sign. Air is the element astrologers read as thought, language and exchange. The poured water is usually read as something handed on to everyone, such as knowledge or an idea.
Fixed is one of the three modes, the ways a sign acts: fixed signs hold on and keep going. This is the surprise in Aquarius. The sign with the open-minded reputation rarely changes its mind.
The two rulers explain a second contradiction. A ruler is the planet linked to a sign. Saturn stands for structure, rules and limits. Uranus stands for the break with a pattern. Aquarius has both: it wants a system that is fair to everyone, and it wants to be free of whatever that system expects.
Aquarius at its best
- Thinking from scratch. "Why do we do it this way?" is a real question, not a provocation.
- Fair in a matter-of-fact way. The intern and the director get the same tone and the same attention.
- A friend for the long run. It may not call for four months, and then it turns up with a van on moving day.
Where Aquarius struggles
- Feelings handled as ideas. Asked how it feels, it answers with an analysis.
- Stubbornness dressed as logic. The position has not moved in ten years. Only the arguments are new.
- Distance as the default. It is warm toward humanity and a little lost with one crying person on the sofa.
Read all of this as tendencies. When people say "my sign", they mean the Sun sign, the sign the Sun stood in at your birth. It is one part of a birth chart, which also holds the Moon, the planets and the Rising sign.
Aquarius loves people in the plural first. The singular takes a little longer.
Aquarius in love
For Aquarius, friendship is the foundation of love, not the consolation prize. It tends to fall for a mind first: someone whose way of thinking it has not met before.
Affection shows as respect. It takes your ideas seriously, remembers what you said about your project three months ago, and is glad when you have an evening out without it. Space, for this sign, is a form of trust. It needs time and friends of its own, and it grants you the same.
- What tends to feel easy: partners with a full life of their own, who like to talk and do not count the hours spent together.
- What takes more translation: partners who measure closeness in time together and in feelings spoken aloud. They can read the calm of Aquarius as indifference when it is meant as trust.
The growth edge in love is saying a feeling in one plain sentence, without the theory around it, and staying in the room when emotions run high.
Aquarius at work
Aquarius tends to do best where it can improve a system: redesign a process, question a habit, or connect two people who should have met long ago.
Its natural contributions are spotting the pattern, thinking far ahead and being unimpressed by titles. This is the colleague who rebuilds the shared spreadsheet over the weekend, uninvited, and turns out to be right.
What takes more effort: following an instruction it finds illogical, and finishing once the problem is solved in its head. Two habits tend to help: showing the steps and not only the result, and asking how someone is before proposing the fix.

Leo, the opposite sign, shares a theme with Aquarius: the one and the many. Leo wants to be seen as one particular person. Aquarius thinks about the group. Why two Aquarians can be so different
The Sun stays in Aquarius for about 30 days, so everyone born in that span shares the Sun sign. The rest of the chart moves at other speeds.
The Moon changes signs about every two and a half days. It describes your feelings and what you need to feel safe. An Aquarius with the Moon in Cancer is cool in a debate and soft in private. It needs a home and familiar faces, and it takes things more personally than it admits. What your Moon sign means
The Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, changes about every two hours. It describes how you come across. With Taurus rising, an Aquarius seems calm, unhurried and fond of comfort, and the unconventional side shows only once you know them. How to find your Rising sign
What to do next with your Aquarius Sun
- If you were born on a day when the Sun changes signs, check your Sun sign with your birth time.
- Find your Moon sign and your Rising sign, and notice where they agree with Aquarius and where they pull another way.
- Look at Saturn and Uranus in your chart. Uranus spends about seven years in a sign, so you share its sign with everyone close to your age. Its house, the area of life it falls in, is the personal part.

Questions, answered
What are the dates for Aquarius?
The Sun is in Aquarius from around January 20 to around February 18. The exact day shifts by a day from year to year, so people born on a changeover day need their birth time to be sure.
Is Aquarius an air sign or a water sign?
Aquarius is an air sign, like Gemini and Libra. Its symbol is the Water Bearer, a figure pouring water from a jar, which is why many people take it for a water sign.
Which planet rules Aquarius?
Traditional astrology gives Aquarius to Saturn, and modern astrology gives it to Uranus. Many astrologers read both: Saturn for structure and principle, Uranus for the break with a pattern.
Which signs get along well with Aquarius?
No sign is ruled out. The other air signs and the fire signs often feel easy at first, while earth and water signs can take more translation. Two whole charts say far more than two Sun signs.
