Capricorn is the tenth sign of the zodiac. The Sun moves through it from around December 21 or 22 to around January 19 or 20. It is a cardinal earth sign ruled by Saturn, and its core is building something that lasts: Capricorn thinks in years where others think in weeks.

Capricorn traits: strengths and growth edges

The symbol of Capricorn is the Sea-Goat, a goat with the tail of a fish. Most descriptions keep only the goat: sure-footed, climbing, never looking down. The tail is worth remembering too. Astrologers read it as the feeling under the surface, a reminder that Capricorn's reserve is not an absence of feeling.

Earth is the element astrologers read as practical sense: what can be touched, counted and used. Cardinal is one of the three modes, the ways a sign acts: cardinal signs start things. Saturn, the ruling planet traditionally linked to the sign, stands for time, limits, structure and responsibility.

The cardinal part is often overlooked. Capricorn does not only endure. It founds, sets up and takes charge, and then it stays. In the northern hemisphere, the Sun enters Capricorn at the December solstice, the shortest day of the year. That is a fitting picture: work begun in the dark season, on the understanding that the light comes back slowly.

Capricorn at its best

  • Reliable under load. When the plan falls apart at five in the afternoon, this is the person who stays, makes a list and works down it.
  • Patient with slow results. It can work toward a degree for three years without needing applause along the way.
  • Dry and funny. The humor is understated and often at its own expense. People who call the sign stern have not sat next to one in a long meeting.

Where Capricorn struggles

  • Rest feels unearned. A free Sunday turns into sorting the basement.
  • Asking for help late. It carries the load alone until everyone else can see it.
  • Caution that looks like coldness. The feelings are there. They get checked twice before they are shown.

Read all of this as tendencies. When people say "my sign", they mean the Sun sign, the sign the Sun stood in at your birth. It is one part of a birth chart, which also holds the Moon, the planets and the Rising sign.

Capricorn does not ask whether something is exciting. It asks whether it will still be standing in twenty years.

Capricorn in love

Capricorn tends to open slowly. It watches first whether someone keeps their word, and it rarely says "I love you" lightly.

Affection shows in what it does. It fixes the bike, drives you to the airport at five in the morning and remembers the date of your exam. "I checked the train times for you" is a love letter in this sign's language.

  • What tends to feel easy: partners who are dependable, have goals of their own and do not need constant proof.
  • What takes more translation: partners who need affection spoken often and plans changed on a whim. One person hears care in the practical gesture. The other is still waiting for the words.

The growth edge in love is letting the other person see doubt and tiredness, not only competence, and protecting time together as firmly as a deadline.

Capricorn at work

Work is familiar ground for this sign, though "workaholic" misses the point. Capricorn tends to respect craft: skill that was earned slowly, and authority that rests on it. It will accept a dull year for the sake of an ability that will matter in ten.

Its natural contributions are structure, planning backward from a deadline and staying calm when others do not. This is the colleague who reads the whole contract, including the appendix.

What takes more effort: delegating, tolerating sloppy work, and stopping. In charge, Capricorn tends to be fair, clear and sparing with praise, so saying "good work" out loud is a habit worth building.

The Sun in Capricorn does not describe your career by itself. For that, astrologers look at the Midheaven, the point of the zodiac that was highest in the sky at your birth. What your Midheaven sign says about your work

The dates are given in Universal Time and can shift by a day depending on the year and on where you live. The Sun changes signs at a specific minute, so on a changeover day your birth time decides which sign it is. All zodiac sign dates, and what being born on the cusp means

Cancer, the opposite sign, shares a theme with Capricorn: taking care. Cancer does it at home and through feeling. Capricorn does it out in the world, through duty and provision. Saturn, the ruler, takes about 29.5 years to circle the Sun and spends about two and a half years in each sign. That slow pace suits a sign whose main material is time.

Why two Capricorns can be so different

The Sun stays in Capricorn for about 30 days, so everyone born in that span shares the Sun sign. The rest of the chart moves at other speeds.

The Moon changes signs about every two and a half days. It describes your feelings and what you need to feel safe. A Capricorn with the Moon in Pisces is organized on the outside and impressionable on the inside, and it needs quiet and music to recover. What your Moon sign means

The Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, changes about every two hours. It describes how you come across. With Sagittarius rising, a Capricorn seems easygoing and quick to laugh, and the planner appears only later. How to find your Rising sign

What to do next with your Capricorn Sun

  1. If you were born on a day when the Sun changes signs, check your Sun sign with your birth time.
  2. Find your Moon sign and your Rising sign, and notice where they agree with Capricorn and where they pull another way.
  3. Look at Saturn in your chart. As the ruler of Capricorn, its sign and its house, the area of life it falls in, are read as the place where you build slowly and take things seriously.

If you would rather have it read for you, a Birth Chart Reading is written for your chart and calculated from your exact birth data.

Questions, answered

What are the dates for Capricorn?

The Sun is in Capricorn from around December 21 or 22 to around January 19 or 20. The exact day shifts by a day from year to year, so people born on a changeover day need their birth time to be sure.

What element and ruling planet does Capricorn have?

Capricorn is an earth sign, like Taurus and Virgo, and its mode is cardinal. Its ruling planet is Saturn, which astrologers link to time, structure and responsibility.

Is Capricorn really cold and only interested in work?

No. Capricorn tends to be reserved and to show care through action more than words. Many people with this Sun sign have a dry sense of humor and strong loyalty that show once trust is there.

Which signs get along well with Capricorn?

No sign is ruled out. The other earth signs and the water signs often feel easy at first, while fire and air signs can take more translation. Two whole charts say far more than two Sun signs.
