What is my Moon sign?

The sign the Moon stood in when you were born. What it says about your feelings and needs, and what you need to find yours.

In short

  • Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born.
  • It describes your inner life: how you feel, what you need and what makes you feel safe.
  • The Moon changes signs every two to two and a half days, so you need your date of birth and, on a day of change, your birth time.
  • Your Sun sign shows your direction, your Moon sign shows what you need on the way. The two are read together.

Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born. It describes your inner life: how you feel, what you need and what makes you feel safe. To find it you need your date of birth and, ideally, your time and place of birth, because the Moon changes signs every two to two and a half days.

What your Moon sign means

In astrology the Moon stands for the part of you that reacts before you think. It is read as your emotional baseline: the mood you return to, the way you calm down, the kind of care you hope to receive.

A Moon in Taurus settles with routine, good food and time. A Moon in Gemini settles by talking things through. Neither is more emotional than the other. They need different things.

Two questions help you recognize your own Moon:

  • What do you reach for at the end of a hard day?
  • What has to be in place before you can relax around someone?

The Moon tends to show most clearly in private, with family, a partner or close friends. Like everything in a chart, it describes tendencies. Your Moon sign suggests what you need. It does not decide how you deal with it.

How to find your Moon sign

The Moon is the fastest body in your chart. It moves about 13 degrees a day and circles the whole zodiac, the ring of the twelve signs, in about 27.3 days. That leaves two to two and a half days for each sign.

Zodiac circle with twelve signs and a crescent Moon traveling once around the ring.
The Moon passes through all twelve signs in about 27 days, a little over two days per sign.

This speed is why your birthday alone is not always enough. A Moon sign calculator works with three pieces of information:

  1. Your date of birth. On a little more than half of all days, the Moon stays in one sign from midnight to midnight. Then the date settles the question.
  2. Your time of birth. On the other days the Moon crosses into the next sign at some point. Say it moved from Taurus into Gemini at 2:10 in the afternoon. Born that morning, you have a Taurus Moon. Born that evening, a Gemini Moon.
  3. Your place of birth. The Moon changes signs at one moment for the whole world, but clocks show a different time in every time zone. The place tells the calculation which time zone applies.

Without a birth time you may still get a clear answer. If the Moon changed signs on your birthday, two neighboring signs are possible. Read both descriptions below and see which one sounds like you. What a chart can tell you without a birth time

One sentence cannot hold a person. How your Moon plays out also depends on its house, meaning the area of life it falls in, and on the planets it is connected to. How to read a birth chart step by step

Moon sign vs. Sun sign

Your Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in when you were born. It is the one people mean when they say "my sign". Astrologers read the Sun as your core and your direction. The Moon is read as what you bring with you: your reflexes, your comfort, your needs.

If your Sun sign has only ever fit half of you, the other half is often the Moon. How Sun, Moon and Rising sign fit together

How your Moon and your Sun work together

A simple way to read the two: the Sun is what you want, the Moon is what you need. When both stand in signs of the same element, for example two fire signs, want and need tend to point the same way. When the signs are very different, you may notice two voices in yourself.

Take an Aries Sun with a Cancer Moon. The Aries Sun wants to go first and decide quickly. The Cancer Moon needs a safe home base and takes things to heart. This is someone who charges ahead in public and wants to be looked after in private. With a Capricorn Moon, the same Aries Sun would relax only once the work is done.

Your Sun sign describes where you are headed, and your Moon sign describes what you need to feel safe on the way.

Two cases stand out. If you were born close to a new moon, the Sun and the Moon usually stood in the same sign, and want and need are read as closely aligned. If you were born close to a full moon, they usually stood in opposite signs. That is read as a pull between two sides that you learn to balance.

What to do next with your Moon sign

Once you know your Moon sign, treat its description as a question, not a verdict. Watch for a week what actually calms you down, and compare that with what your Moon is said to need.

Then put the Moon next to your Sun sign and ask where the two agree and where they pull apart. The third piece is your Rising sign, also called the Ascendant: the sign on the eastern horizon at your birth. How to find your Rising sign

If you are unsure about your birth time, look at your birth certificate. For the Moon the time matters only on a day of change. For the Rising sign it matters every day.

Questions, answered

How do I find my Moon sign?

You need your date of birth and, ideally, your time and place of birth. A calculated birth chart then shows which sign the Moon stood in at that moment.

Can I find my Moon sign without my birth time?

Often, yes. The Moon stays in one sign for two to two and a half days, so on many days the date alone is enough. If the Moon changed signs on your birthday, two signs are possible until you know the time.

Is my Moon sign more important than my Sun sign?

Neither is more important. The Sun is read as your core and your direction, the Moon as your feelings and needs. Many people recognize their private side more easily in their Moon sign.

Is my Moon sign the same as the Moon phase I was born under?

No. The phase says how much of the Moon was lit, from new moon to full moon. The Moon sign says which of the twelve signs the Moon stood in. They are two separate pieces of information.
