Sun, Moon & Rising
Sun, Moon and Rising: your Big Three
Three signs describe the core of your chart. Here is what each one means and why they rarely say the same thing.

In short
- Your Big Three are your Sun sign, your Moon sign and your Rising sign, also called the Ascendant.
- The Sun is your core, the Moon is what you feel and need, the Rising sign is how you meet the world.
- For the Sun you need your birth date. For the Rising sign you need your exact birth time and birthplace.
- The three often pull in different directions. That is usually why your Sun sign alone never fully fit.

If you know only one thing about your chart, it is probably your Sun sign. It is the one people mean when they ask "What's your sign?". Your birth chart holds two more signs that matter just as much: your Moon sign and your Rising sign. Together, astrologers call them the Big Three.
Your Sun sign: who you are at the core
The Sun takes a year to travel through all twelve signs, so it spends about a month in each. It stands for your core: your vitality, what makes you feel alive, and the qualities you grow into over a lifetime.
The dates of the signs shift by a day from year to year. If you were born on the first or the last day of a sign, only a calculated chart tells you for certain which one is yours.
Your Moon sign: what you feel and need
The Moon moves fast. It changes signs about every two and a half days. It describes your inner life: what comforts you, how you react under pressure, and what you need to feel at home.
Many people recognize themselves in their Moon sign more than in their Sun sign, especially in private. The Sun is what you show when you are at your best. The Moon is what you reach for when you are tired.
Your Rising sign: how you meet the world
Your Rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. It changes about every two hours, which makes it the most personal of the three.
It describes the first impression you make and your instinctive way of walking into something new. It also sets the layout of the twelve houses, so it shapes the whole chart. How to find your Rising sign

The Big Three are not three separate descriptions. They are three voices in one person, and they do not always agree.
Take a Leo Sun with a Virgo Moon and Scorpio Rising. The Leo core wants to shine and to give generously. The Virgo Moon needs order to relax and tends to be hard on itself. The Scorpio Rising meets strangers with reserve and watches before it trusts. On paper that is one "Leo". In life it is someone who seems guarded at first, turns out to be warm, and quietly wonders whether the work was good enough.
Now keep the Leo Sun and change the rest: a Sagittarius Moon and Gemini Rising. This person is talkative from the first minute, laughs easily and needs freedom far more than order. Same Sun sign, a very different person.
If you ever read about your sign and thought "half of this isn't me", the other half is usually your Moon and your Rising sign.
There are 1,728 possible combinations of the three. That is why a description of your Sun sign alone can only ever be a rough sketch.
What you need to find yours
| Sign | What you need |
|---|---|
| Sun sign | Your date of birth. On the day the Sun changes signs, also your birth time. |
| Moon sign | Your date of birth. If the Moon changed signs that day, also your birth time. |
| Rising sign | Your exact birth time and your birthplace. |
Beyond the Big Three
The Big Three are the best place to start, not the whole story. Mercury shows how you think and talk, Venus how you love, Mars how you go after what you want. What a birth chart is and how its parts fit together
Questions, answered
Which of the Big Three is the most important?
None of them on its own. The Sun shows your direction, the Moon your needs and the Rising sign your approach. Many astrologers start with the Rising sign because it sets the layout of the whole chart.
Is the Rising sign the same as the Ascendant?
Yes. Rising sign and Ascendant are two names for the same thing.
Can my Sun sign and my Moon sign be the same?
Yes. If you were born around a new moon, the Sun and the Moon stood in the same sign.
I was born on the cusp. Do I have two Sun signs?
No. The Sun is in one sign at any given moment. On the day it changes signs, your birth time decides which one is yours.
