Birth chart basics

The four elements in astrology: what you reach for first

Fire, earth, air and water sort the twelve signs into four temperaments, and the mix in your chart says more than your Sun sign alone.

In short

  • The four elements of astrology are fire, earth, air and water, and each one groups three of the twelve zodiac signs.
  • An element describes what a sign reaches for first: fire for action, earth for what is real and useful, air for ideas and words, water for feeling.
  • Your chart holds a mix of elements, counted from the signs of your Sun, Moon, Rising sign and planets, not from your Sun sign alone.
  • A missing element is never a defect: it is read as something you do deliberately instead of by reflex.

The four elements of astrology are fire, earth, air and water. Each one groups three of the twelve zodiac signs and describes what those signs reach for first: fire acts, earth builds, air thinks and water feels. Your birth chart holds a mix of all four, and a missing element is read as something you do deliberately, never as a defect.

Which signs belong to which element

ElementSignsReaches first for
FireAries, Leo, SagittariusAction, enthusiasm, a goal
EarthTaurus, Virgo, CapricornWhat is real, useful and lasting
AirGemini, Libra, AquariusIdeas, words and other people
WaterCancer, Scorpio, PiscesFeeling, closeness and trust

Around the zodiac circle the elements repeat in a fixed order: fire, earth, air, water, three times in a row. Two things follow from that.

Signs of the same element stand four signs apart, which is 120 degrees. Connect them and you get a triangle.

And neighboring signs never share an element. The sign right before or after yours works in a different way than yours does, which is one reason it can seem so foreign.

What fire, earth, air and water are read as

Think of an element as a first reflex. When something new happens, each one answers a different question.

Fire: what can I do?

Fire signs are read as warm, direct and quick to start. They need something to be excited about and bring energy into a room. Overdone, fire turns impatient, runs over other people or burns out before the work is finished.

Earth: what is real here?

Earth signs trust what can be touched, tested and finished. They are read as patient, practical and dependable. Overdone, earth gets stuck, plays it too safe or measures everything by its use.

Air: how can I understand this?

Air signs step back to think and reach for words. They are read as curious, sociable and fair. Overdone, air stays in the head, talks about a feeling instead of having it, or keeps every option open.

Water: how does this feel?

Water signs read the mood before the facts. They are read as sensitive, loyal and caring. Overdone, water takes things personally, gets flooded by other people's feelings or withdraws.

Astrologers traditionally pair fire with air and earth with water. The sign opposite a fire sign is always an air sign, and the sign opposite an earth sign is always a water sign. This is the simple logic behind most lists of matching signs. It is a first hint and nothing more, as the article on which zodiac signs are compatible explains.

How to find the element balance in your chart

Your Sun sign gives you one element. A birth chart contains much more: the Moon, eight planets and your Rising sign, each in a sign of its own, and each sign with its element. The balance of all of them is what astrologers call your element mix.

A simple way to count:

  1. Write down the signs of your Sun, Moon and Rising sign (also called the Ascendant), and of Mercury, Venus and Mars.
  2. Note the element of each sign.
  3. Count. Sun, Moon and Rising sign weigh the most.

An example: Sun in Virgo, Moon in Capricorn, Rising sign in Taurus, Mercury in Virgo, Venus in Libra, Mars in Cancer. That is four times earth, once air, once water and no fire. This chart is read as steady, practical and hard to rush.

Two notes on counting. First, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto stay in one sign for seven years or more, so everyone your age shares them. Many astrologers give them little weight here. Second, there is no official formula. Astrologers weigh the points differently, so treat your count as a sketch, not a score.

The Rising sign needs your birth time. If you do not know it, count without it. Here is how to find your Rising sign.

What a missing element means

Almost no chart is evenly spread. Most people have plenty of one or two elements and little or nothing of another. A missing element does not mean that this side of life is closed to you. Astrologers read it in two ways.

You do it on purpose. What others do by reflex, you do by decision, and often with more care for that reason.

You look for it in others. People with little of an element are often drawn to partners, friends and coworkers who have a lot of it.

Little or noOften read as
FireGetting started takes a decision instead of an impulse. You build motivation with plans, deadlines or company.
EarthRoutine and practical details take conscious effort. You may set up systems that carry you.
AirStepping back and putting things into words takes practice. You tend to understand by doing or feeling first.
WaterNaming a feeling comes more slowly than solving the problem. You show care through action or words.

A missing element is not a hole in you. It is the thing you do on purpose instead of by reflex.

The opposite case deserves a look too. An element you have a lot of is read as your first tool, and also as the one you overuse under pressure.

What to do with your element balance

  1. Count your elements as described above.
  2. Name your strongest element. Ask where it serves you and where you lean on it too much.
  3. Name your weakest. Ask how you have learned to do that on purpose, and who in your life brings it.
  4. Then add the second sorting of the signs, the three modes: cardinal, fixed and mutable signs describe how each element moves.

If you would rather have your chart read as a whole, a Birth Chart Reading is calculated from your exact birth data and written for your chart.

Questions, answered

Which zodiac signs belong to which element?

Fire: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Earth: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Air: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Water: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.

How do I find my dominant element?

Note the signs of your Sun, Moon, Rising sign, Mercury, Venus and Mars and count how many fall into each element. The element with the most entries, weighted toward Sun, Moon and Rising sign, is read as your strongest.

What does it mean if an element is missing in my birth chart?

It is read as a quality that does not come by reflex, so you tend to do it on purpose or look for it in other people. It does not mean you lack that side of life.

Is my element the same as my Sun sign's element?

Your Sun sign gives you one element, and it matters. Your Moon, your Rising sign and the other planets can stand in other elements, so the balance of the whole chart often looks different.
