Which zodiac signs are compatible? The honest answer

The element rule is a fair first sketch of how two temperaments meet. It is not a verdict, and here is what it leaves out.

In short

  • No two zodiac signs are incompatible, and no two are a guaranteed match.
  • The traditional rule says that signs of the same element feel easiest together, and that fire goes well with air and earth with water.
  • That rule compares only the two Sun signs, one point in each birth chart, so it is a hint about temperament and nothing more.
  • Two full charts show where two people connect easily and where they need more translation, and the people decide whether the relationship works.

No two zodiac signs are incompatible, and no two are a guaranteed match. The traditional rule says that signs of the same element get along most easily, and that fire goes well with air and earth with water. That is a fair first hint about temperament. It compares only two Sun signs, one point in each chart, so it cannot decide anything about two real people.

The traditional answer: the four elements

Your sign, the one people ask about, is your Sun sign: the sign the Sun stood in when you were born. Each of the twelve signs belongs to one of the four elements, and almost every list of matching signs is built on them.

ElementSignsTemperamentTends to feel easy withTakes more translation with
FireAries, Leo, Sagittariusquick, direct, enthusiasticfire and airearth and water
EarthTaurus, Virgo, Capricornsteady, practical, patientearth and waterfire and air
AirGemini, Libra, Aquariuscurious, talkative, independentair and fireearth and water
WaterCancer, Scorpio, Piscessensitive, private, loyalwater and earthfire and air

The logic is simple. Fire and air both turn outward and move fast. Earth and water both look for security and take their time. More translation does not mean incompatible. It means that two people start from different instincts and have to explain themselves more often.

Count the signs between you

The element rule comes from the geometry of the zodiac, the circle of twelve signs. What two signs share depends on how far apart they sit. Count from your sign to the other one, the shorter way around the circle.

Besides an element, each sign has a mode: cardinal signs start things, fixed signs hold on, mutable signs adapt. The three modes explained

Signs apartExampleWhat the two signs shareHow astrologers read it
0Aries and AriesElement and modeFamiliar at once, with the same strengths and the same blind spots.
1Aries and TaurusNeitherNeighbors with different styles.
2Aries and GeminiElements that go well togetherFriendly and stimulating.
3Aries and CancerThe modeFriction and drive: a similar way of acting, a different temperament.
4Aries and LeoThe elementThe easiest pairing, alike in temperament.
5Aries and VirgoNeitherLittle common ground at first. Curiosity helps.
6Aries and LibraThe mode, and elements that go well togetherOpposites: each has what the other lacks.

Fire signs (solid) and air signs (dashed) alternate around the circle, 60 degrees apart. The same picture can be drawn for earth and water.

Every row describes a starting point. None of them is a yes or a no.

Why Sun signs alone cannot decide

There are three reasons.

  • The Sun is one point of many. A birth chart also holds the Moon, eight planets and the Rising sign (also called the Ascendant), the sign on the eastern horizon at your birth. The Sun is read as your core and your direction. For love, astrologers look just as closely at the Moon (what you need), Venus (how you love) and Mars (how you pursue and argue).
  • Twelve boxes are too few. About one person in twelve shares your Sun sign. A list treats all of them as the same partner.
  • Neighbors overlap. Seen from Earth, Venus is never more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so it stands in the Sun sign or within two signs of it. An Aries can have Venus in Taurus, and a Taurus can have Venus in Aries. Two neighbors who share neither element nor mode may love in exactly each other's style.

An example. One of you has the Sun in Aries, the other in Cancer: three signs apart, the row that says friction. If both of you have the Moon in Virgo, you calm down in the same way, through order and small practical acts of care. The list says difficult. Daily life may say easy. What Moon signs do in a relationship

A list of matching signs compares two Suns. A relationship is made by two whole people.

What two full charts show

When astrologers compare two people, they place both birth charts on the same zodiac and measure the angles between one person's planets and the other's. This is called synastry. How synastry aspects are read

A full comparison differs from a sign list in three ways.

  1. It has many topics, not one. How you calm down, what attracts you, how you argue and what you commit to are read separately. Most pairs are easy in some of these and demanding in others.
  2. It works with degrees. Two planets in friendly signs only count as a close contact if their degrees are close as well.
  3. It gives no score. Several topics at once cannot be squeezed into one percentage, and an honest comparison does not try.

Even two full charts describe tendencies. They know nothing about your history, your values or how the two of you treat each other on an ordinary Tuesday. Those decide whether a relationship works, and they are in your hands.

What to do next with your two signs

  1. Count the signs between you and read the row in the table. Take it as a sketch of how your temperaments tend to meet.
  2. Do not rule anyone in or out because of a sign. The table cannot carry that weight.
  3. Look up the Moon, Venus and Mars for both of you. Notice where they repeat what the Sun signs say and where they say something else.
  4. Use what you find as a question to each other: the chart says we differ in pace, do we?

If you would like both charts compared in full, a Compatibility Reading is calculated from your exact birth data and your partner's. It describes what tends to feel easy between you and what takes more translation. It never gives a score or says whether you match.

Questions, answered

Which zodiac signs are most compatible?

By the traditional rule, signs of the same element feel easiest together, and fire signs go well with air signs and earth signs with water signs. That describes temperament. It is a first hint and not a verdict.

Which zodiac signs are not compatible?

None. Some combinations start from different instincts and take more explaining, for example fire with water. Astrologers read that as effort, not as a reason against a relationship.

Are opposite zodiac signs compatible?

Opposite signs, such as Aries and Libra, share the same mode and have elements that go well together. Astrologers read them as a pair in which each has what the other lacks. That can attract, and it can cause friction.

Can two people with clashing signs have a good relationship?

Yes. The Sun sign is one point in a chart. Two people whose Sun signs are said to clash can have Moon, Venus and Mars in close, easy contact, and in any case people decide how they treat each other.
