The twelve signs

Aries: the sign that goes first

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and the one that starts before everything is settled. Here is what that looks like in daily life, in love and at work.

In short

  • Aries is the first sign of the zodiac: the Sun is in Aries from around March 20 or 21 until around April 19 or 20.
  • It is a cardinal fire sign ruled by Mars and is read as the impulse to begin: direct, brave and impatient with waiting.
  • Its growth edge is the long middle of things: staying with what it started and checking whether others are keeping up.
  • Being an Aries means your Sun is in Aries. Your Moon sign, Rising sign and Mars sign explain why two Aries can be very different.

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac. The Sun is in Aries from around March 20 or 21 until around April 19 or 20. It is a fire sign, cardinal by mode, and its ruling planet is Mars. At its core, Aries describes the impulse to begin: to act on a thing while everyone else is still deciding whether it is a good idea.

When someone says "I'm an Aries", they mean their Sun sign, the sign the Sun stood in on the day they were born. That is one part of a birth chart, the map of where the Sun, the Moon and the planets stood at your birth. The dates are given in Universal Time and can shift by a day depending on the year and on where you live. On a changeover day, your birth time decides, as the overview of zodiac sign dates explains.

Aries traits: strengths and growth edges

Fire signs are read as warm, direct and quick to act. Cardinal signs open a season, and Aries opens the zodiac itself: the Sun enters Aries at the March equinox, where the circle of twelve signs begins. Fire plus cardinal gives a sign whose talent is the first step.

Aries at its best

  • Starting. Aries sends the application, books the hall, says the awkward thing first. It trusts that the details can be solved on the way.
  • Plain speaking. You usually know where you stand. Aries tends to say "I don't like this plan" in the meeting, not in the hallway afterward.
  • Practical courage. Not fearlessness, more a low tolerance for waiting. Doing the frightening thing often feels easier than thinking about it for another week.
  • A short memory for quarrels. An argument at noon is typically over by dinner. Aries flares up, says it and moves on, sometimes surprised that others have not.

Where Aries struggles

  • The middle. Beginnings are exciting and endings are satisfying. The stretch between them is where Aries projects go quiet: the half-painted fence, the language course that stopped at lesson nine.
  • Waiting. Lines, approval processes, slow walkers. Impatience is the other side of Aries speed.
  • Words that arrive before the thought has landed. The directness that clears the air can also hit harder than intended.
  • Assuming everyone is following. Aries moves fast and looks ahead. Turning around to check who is still there takes practice.

These are tendencies astrologers associate with the sign, not a verdict.

Aries is not the sign that is never afraid. It is the sign that starts anyway.

Aries in love

In relationships, Aries tends to show interest plainly. It texts first, suggests the date, asks the direct question. Ambiguity is uncomfortable: a clear no is often easier for Aries to hear than three weeks of maybe.

Aries typically brings warmth, initiative and a loyalty that shows in action: turning up to help you move, taking your side at the table. It typically needs honesty, room for its own projects, and a partner who can meet a flash of temper without storing it up.

With the other fire signs, Leo and Sagittarius, the pace often feels familiar. With the air signs, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, conversation tends to feed the fire. With earth and water signs, more translation is needed: Aries may read caution as rejection, and the other person may read speed as carelessness. Libra, the opposite sign, is the classic counterpart. Where Aries asks "what do I want?", Libra asks "what works for both of us?", and each has something the other is still learning.

Two Sun signs are a first hint and decide nothing. Two whole charts say far more.

Aries at work

Aries does well where something has to be started, decided or rescued: the first weeks of a project, a launch, a sales target, a crisis that needs a decision now. It is often the colleague who says "let's just try it" and has a first version by Friday.

Work without a finish line is harder, and so are long chains of sign-off. Aries tends to do its best work in sprints with a visible goal, with freedom over how to get there, and next to someone who enjoys turning a rough first version into a clean final one.

As a boss, Aries is usually clear and quick, and can forget that not everyone decides at the same speed. Which direction a working life takes is read from the whole chart, not from the Sun sign alone.

Why two Aries can be so different

You probably know one Aries who turns everything into a race and one who would rather be in the garden. The Sun sign is not wrong for either. It is one factor among many.

  • The Moon sign describes feelings and what you need to feel safe. The Moon changes sign about every two and a half days, so two Aries born in the same week can have different Moon signs. An Aries with the Moon in Pisces acts fast and then needs quiet. What your Moon sign means
  • The Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It changes about every two hours and describes how you come across. An Aries with Capricorn rising looks composed and reserved, with the fire underneath. How to find your Rising sign
  • Mars, the ruler of Aries, can stand in any of the twelve signs. An Aries with Mars in Taurus starts slowly and keeps going. With Mars in Gemini, the drive goes into words. What your Mars sign means
  • Mercury and Venus always stay close to the Sun. Many Aries have one of them in Pisces or Taurus, which softens how they talk or how they love.

What to do next with your Aries Sun

  1. If you were born around March 20 or April 20, check with your birth time that your Sun really is in Aries.
  2. Find your Moon sign and your Rising sign and read the three together.
  3. Use the lists above as questions, not labels. Where are you the one who starts? What helps you finish?

Questions, answered

What are the dates for Aries?

The Sun is in Aries from around March 20 or 21 until around April 19 or 20. The exact day shifts by a day from year to year, so people born on a changeover day need their birth time to be sure.

What are typical Aries traits?

Aries is read as direct, courageous, quick to start and impatient with waiting. These are tendencies of the Sun sign, and the rest of the chart can strengthen or soften them.

Which signs get along well with Aries?

The fire signs Leo and Sagittarius and the air signs Gemini, Libra and Aquarius often share the Aries pace. That is a first hint, not a verdict: how two people fit is read from two whole charts, and the two people decide.

Am I an Aries or a Taurus if I was born on April 19 or 20?

It depends on the year and the time of your birth. The Sun changes signs at a specific minute, not at midnight, and a calculated birth chart shows which side you are on.
