Taurus is the second sign of the zodiac. The Sun is in Taurus from around April 20 until around May 20 or 21. It is an earth sign, fixed by mode, and its ruling planet is Venus. At its core, Taurus describes the wish to build something that lasts and to enjoy it with all five senses, at a pace that will not be hurried.
When someone says "I'm a Taurus", they mean their Sun sign, the sign the Sun stood in on the day they were born. That is one part of a birth chart, the map of where the Sun, the Moon and the planets stood at your birth. The dates are given in Universal Time and can shift by a day depending on the year and on where you live. On a changeover day, your birth time decides, as the overview of zodiac sign dates explains.
Taurus traits: strengths and growth edges
Earth signs are read as practical, patient and attached to what can be touched. Fixed signs fall in the middle of a season and are read as the ones that hold a course. Earth plus fixed gives the sign astrologers describe as the steadiest of the twelve. A useful picture is a heavy wheel: it takes effort to set in motion, and once it turns, it keeps turning.
Taurus at its best
- Staying power. Taurus is still going to the pottery class in year four. It repots the plant instead of replacing it, and Thursday at six means Thursday at six.
- Calm that steadies others. When things go wrong, Taurus tends to lower its voice, put the kettle on and ask what needs doing first.
- A feel for quality. It notices the fabric, the bread, the chair that is actually comfortable. Taurus would rather own one good pan than three poor ones.
- Unhurried pleasure. A long breakfast, a garden, a walk with no destination. Taurus knows these are not wasted time.
Where Taurus struggles
- Change it did not choose. A reorganized office, a moved deadline, a rearranged kitchen. Pressure rarely helps. A good reason and a few days usually do.
- Getting started. The weight that keeps Taurus going also keeps it sitting. The hardest part of the run is leaving the couch.
- Holding on too long. To a job, an opinion, a grudge, a jacket from fifteen years ago.
- Saying no by not moving. Taurus seldom argues. It simply stays where it is, and others experience that as a wall.
These are tendencies astrologers associate with the sign, not a verdict.
Taurus is slow to start and hard to stop. It is one quality, seen from two sides.
Taurus in love
In relationships, Taurus takes its time. It watches for a while whether words and actions match before it decides. Once it has decided, it is there, and it plans to stay.
Taurus typically shows love through the senses and through presence: a meal cooked for you, a hand on your back, knowing how you take your coffee, the same side of the bed for years. It typically needs reliability, physical closeness and calm. Mixed signals and pressure for a quick answer are hard for it. The growth edge is possessiveness: mistaking closeness for ownership.
With the other earth signs, Virgo and Capricorn, the practical rhythm often feels familiar. With the water signs Cancer and Pisces, feeling and steadiness tend to feed each other. With fire and air signs, more translation is needed: they may read Taurus as slow, and Taurus may read them as restless. Scorpio, the opposite sign, is the classic counterpart. Taurus wants peace, Scorpio wants to know what lies under the peace, and each has something the other is still learning.
Two Sun signs are a first hint and decide nothing. Two whole charts say far more.
Taurus at work
Taurus does well where something is built up over time and where quality can be seen and touched: a craft, a kitchen, a garden, a design studio, a client relationship that lasts ten years. It is often the colleague who keeps the long project on course and is still calm at five o'clock on deadline day.
Constant reprioritizing is harder, and so is being rushed or changing course once a plan is set. Taurus tends to do its best work with one clear task at a time, enough time to do it properly and a pleasant place to do it in: good light, a decent chair, real coffee.
Which direction a working life takes is read from the whole chart, not from the Sun sign alone.

Why two Taurus people can be so different
You probably know one Taurus who has lived on the same street for thirty years and one who has moved four times. The Sun sign is not wrong for either. It is one factor among many.
- The Moon sign describes feelings and what you need to feel safe. The Moon changes sign about every two and a half days, so two Taurus people born in the same week can have different Moon signs. A Taurus with the Moon in Gemini is steady in what it does and restless in what it feels. What your Moon sign means
- The Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It changes about every two hours and describes how you come across. A Taurus with Aries rising seems fast and direct, and the patience only shows later. How to find your Rising sign
- Venus, the ruler of Taurus, is never more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. With the Sun in Taurus, Venus is in Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini or Cancer. A Taurus with Venus in Aries falls quickly and then stays. What your Venus sign means
What to do next with your Taurus Sun
- If you were born around April 20 or May 20, check with your birth time that your Sun really is in Taurus.
- Find your Moon sign and your Rising sign and read the three together.
- Use the lists above as questions, not labels. What are you building that is worth your patience? What are you holding on to out of habit?

Questions, answered
What are the dates for Taurus?
The Sun is in Taurus from around April 20 until around May 20 or 21. The exact day shifts by a day from year to year, so people born on a changeover day need their birth time to be sure.
What are typical Taurus traits?
Taurus is read as patient, reliable, practical and fond of comfort and good quality, and as slow to accept change. These are tendencies of the Sun sign, and the rest of the chart can strengthen or soften them.
Which signs get along well with Taurus?
The earth signs Virgo and Capricorn and the water signs Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces often share the Taurus wish for calm and depth. That is a first hint, not a verdict: how two people fit is read from two whole charts, and the two people decide.
Is Taurus really stubborn?
Astrologers read Taurus as a fixed sign, one that holds its course. That shows as loyalty and staying power on some days and as resistance to change on others. It is the same quality both times.
