In short

  • A Jupiter return is the time when Jupiter comes back to the exact position it had at your birth.
  • Jupiter needs 11.86 years for one round, so the returns fall around ages 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72.
  • Astrologers read a Jupiter return as the start of a new twelve-year cycle of growth, and as a good time to ask where you want to expand next.
  • Jupiter is in Leo from around June 30, 2026 and in Virgo from July 26, 2027, so people born with Jupiter in those signs have their return then.

A Jupiter return is the time when Jupiter comes back to the exact position it had in the sky when you were born. Jupiter needs 11.86 years to circle the Sun, so it happens around ages 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72. Astrologers read it as the start of a new twelve-year cycle of growth: a time to ask where you want to expand next.

What is a Jupiter return?

Seen from Earth, Jupiter moves through all twelve signs of the zodiac in 11.86 years and spends about one year in each.

Your birth chart, the map of the sky for the minute and place you were born, records where Jupiter stood at that moment: its sign and its exact degree. Almost twelve years later Jupiter has gone once around and reaches that degree again. That moment, and the period around it, is your Jupiter return. It is a transit, the general word for a moving planet meeting a point of your birth chart. What a transit is

In astrology, Jupiter stands for growth, confidence, learning and the search for meaning. Its return is read as a fresh start in exactly these things: one Jupiter cycle is complete and the next begins.

A circle of twelve numbered segments with Jupiter at the top and an arrow that runs once around and returns to Jupiter.
Jupiter spends about one year in each of the twelve signs. After almost twelve years it is back where it stood at your birth.

Because Jupiter stays in a sign for about a year, people born within a few months of each other usually share a Jupiter sign. Your Jupiter return is therefore something you tend to share with many of your old classmates.

SecondAround 24Finding your own direction as an adult
ThirdAround 36Widening what you have built
FourthAround 48Asking what still feels meaningful

SixthAround 72Perspective and generosity

A return does not land on a birthday. One round takes 11.86 years, slightly less than twelve, so each return comes a little earlier than the one before. On average the first falls a little before the 12th birthday. By the sixth, the difference has grown to most of a year, and the return lies closer to the 71st birthday than to the 72nd.

How long does a Jupiter return last?

There are two common answers. The strict one counts the exact crossing of the birth position. Once a year, for about four months, Jupiter appears to move backward, seen from Earth, which is called retrograde. Depending on where that happens, Jupiter crosses your birth position either once or three times: forward, backward and forward again.

The wider answer counts the whole time Jupiter spends in the sign of your birth Jupiter, about one year. This is why astrologers speak of a Jupiter year more than of a Jupiter day.

What a Jupiter return means

Astrologers read the Jupiter return as the opening of a new chapter of growth. Typical Jupiter questions are:

  • Where do I want to grow in the next twelve years?
  • What have I learned since the last return that I can now use?
  • What would I try if I trusted myself a little more?

It helps to set it beside the better-known Saturn return at about age 29. Saturn is read as structure and limits, Jupiter as expansion and trust.

Saturn asks what you are ready to carry. Jupiter asks where you want to go.

Jupiter is often called the lucky planet. That is a simplification. A Jupiter return is not a promise that good things arrive on their own, and Jupiter's "more" is also read as a tendency to overdo: too many plans, too many yeses. Astrology describes the theme of a time. What you do with it is yours.

Where Jupiter is from 2025 to 2028, and whose return that is

Everyone born with Jupiter in a sign has a Jupiter return while Jupiter passes through that sign again.

Jupiter inDates
CancerAround June 9, 2025 to around June 30, 2026
LeoAround June 30, 2026 to July 25, 2027
VirgoJuly 26, 2027 to around August 24, 2028
LibraFrom around August 24, 2028

The dates are given in Universal Time and can shift by one day depending on where you live.

As a rough guide, the people concerned are around 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 or 72 in the span in question. Age alone does not settle the sign, because Jupiter changes sign at a different point of each year. Only a calculated chart shows the sign and degree of your Jupiter for certain.

One detail for Jupiter in Leo: at the start of 2027 Jupiter is retrograde, and it turns direct in mid-April 2027 at 17° Leo. A birth Jupiter a few degrees past 17° Leo is therefore crossed three times, the last time after mid-April 2027.

How the sign and house of your Jupiter color it

The basic theme is the same for everyone. The sign of your Jupiter sets the style, the house the area of life.

The sign shows how you grow. Astrologers read Jupiter in Cancer as growing through care, family and belonging, Jupiter in Leo through creative expression and a generous heart, Jupiter in Virgo through skill and being useful, Jupiter in Libra through relationships and fairness. All twelve Jupiter signs

The house shows where. Houses are the twelve areas of life in a chart, and they depend on your birth time.

  • Jupiter in the third house: learning, writing, everyday exchange
  • Jupiter in the fourth house: home and roots
  • Jupiter in the ninth house: travel, study, beliefs
  • Jupiter in the tenth house: career and your public role

How to work with your Jupiter return

  1. Find your Jupiter. Look up its sign, degree and house in your birth chart. Without a birth time you still get the sign and the degree.
  2. Look back twelve years. What began around your last return, and what has become of it?
  3. Choose one area to grow in. A course, a journey, a subject you have wanted to understand for a long time.
  4. Keep the measure. More is not always better. A Jupiter return is no basis for financial decisions.

If your return falls in 2027, the 2027 Year Ahead Reading compares the moving sky of that year with your birth chart, month by month, calculated from your exact birth data.

Questions, answered

What is a Jupiter return?

It is the time when Jupiter returns to the exact place in the zodiac where it stood when you were born. Jupiter takes 11.86 years for one full circle, so this happens about every twelve years.

At what age is your Jupiter return?

Around ages 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72. Because one round takes slightly less than twelve years, each return comes a little earlier in relation to your birthday than the one before.

How long does a Jupiter return last?

Jupiter crosses its exact birth position either once or three times, depending on its retrograde phase. Many astrologers count the whole time Jupiter spends in the sign of your birth Jupiter, which is about one year.

Is a Jupiter return a lucky year?

Not in the sense of a promise. Astrologers read it as a time that favors growth, learning and confidence, and it describes a theme, not an event. What comes of it depends on what you do.
