A Saturn return is the time when Saturn comes back to the exact position it had in the sky when you were born. Saturn takes about 29.5 years to circle the Sun, so it happens at about age 29, again at about 58 to 60, and a third time around 87 to 88. Astrologers read it as a time to take stock, take on responsibility and build something that lasts.
What is a Saturn return?
Seen from Earth, Saturn moves through all twelve signs of the zodiac in about 29.5 years and spends about two and a half years in each.
Your birth chart, the map of the sky for the minute and place you were born, records where Saturn stood at that moment: its sign and its exact degree. About 29.5 years later Saturn has gone once around and arrives at that degree again. That moment, and the period around it, is your Saturn return.
In astrology, Saturn stands for structure, limits, responsibility and the lessons that take time. Its return is read as a review: one full Saturn cycle is complete, and the next one begins.
Everyone has a Saturn return. It does not mean that anything is wrong with your chart.
Saturn return age: 29, 58 and 87
| Return | Age | Often described as |
|---|---|---|
| First | About 29, between roughly 28 and 30 | Becoming an adult on your own terms |
| Second | About 58 to 60 | Looking at what you have built, and at what comes next |
| Third | Around 87 to 88 | Looking back on a whole life |
How long does a Saturn return last?
There are two common answers. The strict one counts the exact crossing of the birth position. For some months of every year Saturn appears to move backward, seen from Earth, which is called retrograde. Because of this it often crosses the birth position three times within about nine months: forward, backward and forward again.
The wider answer counts the whole time Saturn spends in the sign of your birth Saturn, about two and a half years. This is why astrologers tend to speak of a period, not of a day.
What a Saturn return means
Astrologers read the first Saturn return as the end of a long apprenticeship. For 29 years you have tried things out, often by rules that came from other people. Now the question changes: what of this is really mine, and what am I ready to be responsible for?
Around 29, many people rethink their work, their relationships and where they live. Some commit: to a profession, a person, a place. Some leave something that no longer fits. Astrologers read both as the same theme, taking stock and choosing what to build on.
Typical Saturn questions:
- What do I want to be responsible for?
- What have I outgrown?
- What would I build if I knew it had to last?
A Saturn return is less a test you pass or fail than a question: what do you want to keep building?
The second return, at about 58 to 60, is read in the same spirit: what you have built, what you want to pass on, and how you want to shape the next stretch of life.
None of this is a forecast. Astrology describes the theme of a time. What you do with it is yours.

Saturn is in Aries. It was there for a first visit from May 25 to August 31, 2025, came back on February 14, 2026, and stays until April 12, 2028. Everyone born with Saturn in Aries has a Saturn return in this time. That means people born:
- between March 4, 1967 and April 29, 1969 (second return)
- between April 7, 1996 and June 8, 1998 (first return)
- between October 26, 1998 and February 28, 1999 (first return)
In 2027 these are the people who turn 58 to 60, or 28 to 31. Saturn moves from 8° to 28° Aries during 2027. If your birth Saturn stands between those degrees, your exact return falls in that year. The rest of the sky of 2027
| Saturn in | Born | Saturn return while Saturn is in this sign |
|---|---|---|
| Pisces | 1964 to 1967 and 1993 to 1996 | March 7, 2023 to February 13, 2026, except May 25 to August 31, 2025 |
| Aries | 1967 to 1969 and 1996 to early 1999 | May 25 to August 31, 2025, then February 14, 2026 to April 12, 2028 |
| Taurus | Roughly mid-1998 or 1999 to 2000 or 2001 | From April 13, 2028 |
Born in 1998? Saturn changed sign twice that year, so both Aries and Taurus are possible. The dates are given in Universal Time and can shift by one day depending on where you live. Only a calculated chart shows the sign and degree of your Saturn for certain.
How the sign and house of your Saturn color it
The basic theme is the same for everyone. The sign of your Saturn sets its tone, the house its area of life.
The sign shows the style. Aries is linked with initiative, courage and independence. Astrologers read Saturn in Aries as learning to act on your own account: to start things without waiting for permission, and to stay with them once the first rush is over. Saturn in Pisces is read as giving a clear shape to trust and imagination, Saturn in Taurus as building steadiness and patience.
The house shows where it plays out. Houses are the twelve areas of life in a chart, and they depend on your birth time.
- Saturn in the second house: money and what you value
- Saturn in the fourth house: home and roots
- Saturn in the seventh house: partnership
- Saturn in the tenth house: career and your public role
Two other points add to the picture. The Midheaven, the point of the zodiac that was highest in the sky at your birth, describes your public role. What your Midheaven says about career The North Node, a point where the Moon's orbit crosses the path of the Sun, is read as a direction of growth. What the North Node means
How to work with your Saturn return
- Find your Saturn. Look up its sign, degree and house in your birth chart. Without a birth time you still get the sign and the degree.
- Name the question. Use the house as a hint: which area of life is asking for a decision, or for more care?
- Choose one thing to build. Saturn is read as favoring small, steady steps over big gestures: a routine, a skill, a commitment you keep.
- Give it time. The period lasts months, not days. There is no deadline on the exact date.
If your Saturn return is mostly about work and direction, the Career & Purpose Reading is calculated from your exact birth data and written for your chart.
