What your North Node means
Two points in your chart describe what comes easily and what asks you to grow. Here is what they are and how to read them without turning them into fate.

In short
- The lunar nodes are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the path of the Sun. The North Node and the South Node always lie exactly opposite each other.
- Astrologers read the South Node as what feels familiar and comes easily, and the North Node as the less practiced direction that asks for growth.
- The nodes take about 18.6 years to circle the zodiac, about a year and a half per sign, so your birth date is enough to find your North Node sign.
- This is an interpretive tradition for self-reflection. It describes a tendency, not a destiny.

Your North Node is one of the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the path of the Sun, at the position it had when you were born. Astrologers read it as the direction that asks you to grow, and the South Node, exactly opposite, as what already comes easily. Both are points in space, not planets, and reading them is an interpretive tradition, not a statement about your destiny.
What the lunar nodes are, astronomically
Seen from Earth, the Sun travels along one fixed line through the zodiac each year, the ecliptic. The Moon's orbit is tilted by about five degrees against it, so the two paths cross at exactly two places. These crossing points are the lunar nodes.
- The North Node is where the Moon crosses the Sun's path heading north. It is also called the ascending node.
- The South Node is where the Moon crosses heading south, the descending node. It always lies exactly opposite the North Node: in the opposite sign, at the same degree.
The nodes slide slowly backward through the zodiac and take about 18.6 years for one full circle, about a year and a half per sign. Eclipses happen near the nodes, because only there can the Sun, the Moon and the Earth line up exactly.
Because the nodes move so slowly, your birth date is enough to find your North Node sign.
How astrologers read the North Node and the South Node
The South Node describes what feels familiar: abilities you seem to have had from the start, reactions that come without thinking, the role you slip into when things get difficult. It is comfortable, which makes it easy to stay there.
The North Node describes the opposite quality. It is less practiced, so it tends to feel awkward at first. Astrologers read it as the direction in which a person grows: not what you are already good at, but what makes your life larger once you practice it.
The South Node is what you can do without thinking. The North Node is what becomes yours through practice.
Two cautions. First, the point is not to leave the South Node behind: astrologers read the axis as a balance between what you already have and what you are learning.
Second, the nodes are an interpretation. Some astrologers connect them with karma and past lives. Others, like this guide, read them plainly as habit and growth. Either way, the North Node describes a tendency. It does not say what will happen to you.

The nodes are always opposite each other, so there are only six pairs of signs: a North Node in Aries means a South Node in Libra. Each sentence names the direction of growth and the habit it grows out of.
| Axis | North Node in the first sign | North Node in the second sign |
|---|---|---|
| Aries–Libra | Aries: acting on your own initiative, instead of waiting for agreement. | Libra: cooperating and sharing decisions, instead of going it alone. |
| Taurus–Scorpio | Taurus: building calm and trust in your own resources, instead of living from crisis to crisis. | Scorpio: allowing depth, change and closeness, instead of holding on to what feels safe. |
| Gemini–Sagittarius | Gemini: asking questions and staying curious, instead of already knowing the answer. | Sagittarius: forming your own conviction and seeing the larger picture, instead of collecting facts without end. |
| Cancer–Capricorn | Cancer: making room for feelings, home and care, instead of measuring yourself by achievement alone. | Capricorn: taking on responsibility and long-term goals, instead of staying where it is familiar. |
| Leo–Aquarius | Leo: showing yourself and creating something of your own, instead of disappearing in the group. | Aquarius: working with others for something larger than yourself, instead of needing center stage. |
| Virgo–Pisces | Virgo: bringing order, craft and daily practice into your life, instead of letting things drift. | Pisces: trusting and leaving room for what cannot be planned, instead of controlling every detail. |
What the house of your North Node adds
The sign describes the quality you are growing toward. The house shows where in life this plays out. Houses are the twelve sections of a chart, each linked to an area of life, and they depend on your exact birth time.
Take a North Node in Libra, which asks for cooperation. In the tenth house, the house of career and public role, astrologers read it as learning to share the lead at work. In the fourth house, the same theme shows up at home, in family life.
The South Node always sits in the opposite house, so the houses are read in pairs as well. Here is what each of the twelve houses stands for. For the direction of your work, the North Node is often read together with the highest point of the chart: what your Midheaven sign says about your career.
The nodal return and the North Node in 2027
The nodal return, about every 18 to 19 years
After about 18.6 years the nodes are back where they stood at your birth. Astrologers call this the nodal return. It falls around the ages of 18 to 19, 37, 55 to 56 and 74.
Astrologers read a nodal return as a time for checking your direction: is the road you are on still the one you would choose? Like the Saturn return around age 29, it is a checkpoint in a cycle, not a forecast of events.
Where the North Node is in 2027
The North Node is in Aquarius for all of 2027, from August 19, 2026 to March 8, 2028, and the South Node is in Leo. These dates are given in Universal Time and can shift by a day depending on where you live. They refer to the mean node, the smoothed average position.
Because eclipses happen near the nodes, both solar eclipses of 2027 fall on this axis: an annular (ring-shaped) solar eclipse on February 6, 2027 at 18° Aquarius, and a total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027 at 10° Leo.
Astrologers read this as a time for the themes of the axis: what you contribute to a group, set against the wish to stand out. If your own North Node is in Aquarius, this span contains your nodal return. The rest of the year's sky is described in the astrology of 2027, and a 2027 Year Ahead Reading compares that sky with your birth chart, month by month.
What to do with your own North Node
- Find the sign of your North Node and read its sentence in the table. If you know your birth time, add the house.
- Ask yourself: what do I fall back on when I am unsure? What would I do more often if it did not feel so unpracticed?
- Test it against your life for a while. If it helps you see a pattern, use it. If it does not fit, trust your experience over the chart.
Questions, answered
What is my North Node?
It is the point where the Moon's orbit crossed the Sun's path heading north at the time you were born. Your birth date is enough to find its sign. For its house you also need your exact birth time.
Is the North Node a planet?
No. The North Node and the South Node are calculated points in space, the two places where the Moon's orbit crosses the path of the Sun. There is nothing to see in the sky at those points.
Is the North Node about karma or past lives?
Some astrologers read the nodes that way, others do not. Read plainly, the South Node describes habits that come easily and the North Node a direction that takes practice. You do not need to believe in past lives to use them.
Why do two calculators show different North Node positions?
There are two ways to calculate the nodes. The mean node is a smoothed average that moves steadily, the true node includes a small wobble. The two differ only slightly, but near a change of sign they can land in different signs.
