Chart ruler: the planet in charge of your chart

The planet that rules your Rising sign is read as the guide of the whole chart, and its sign and house show where it leads.

In short

  • Your chart ruler is the planet that rules your Rising sign, for example Venus with Libra rising or Mars with Aries rising.
  • Astrologers read it as the guide of the whole chart: its sign shows your manner, its house the area of life where much of your energy goes.
  • You need your birth time to find it, because the Rising sign changes about every two hours.
  • It is not the same as the ruler of your Sun sign, which is what most people mean by their ruling planet.

Your chart ruler is the planet that rules your Rising sign. With Libra rising it is Venus, with Aries rising it is Mars. Astrologers read this planet as the guide of the whole chart: its sign shows the manner in which you move through life, and its house shows where much of your energy goes.

What the chart ruler is

Each of the twelve signs is assigned a planet whose nature matches it. That planet is called the ruler of the sign. Mars rules Aries, Venus rules Taurus, and so on around the zodiac.

Your Rising sign (also called the Ascendant) is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It describes how you approach the world and how you begin things. It is also the starting point of the twelve houses, the sections of a chart that stand for areas of life. Because the whole layout of a chart hangs on the Rising sign, the planet that rules it gets a special role. It is called the chart ruler, or the ruler of the Ascendant.

From the Rising sign to its ruler: with Libra rising, Venus is the chart ruler, and its house shows where it leads.

A common mix-up: many people say "I am a Leo, so my ruling planet is the Sun." That is the ruler of the Sun sign, the sign people mean when they ask what your sign is. The chart ruler belongs to the Rising sign. A Leo with Capricorn rising has Saturn as chart ruler.

How to find your chart ruler

  1. Find your Rising sign. You need your date, time and place of birth, because the Rising sign changes about every two hours. How to find your Rising sign
  2. Look up the planet that rules it in the table below.
  3. Find that planet in your own chart and note the sign and the house it stands in.
Rising signChart rulerHow this ruler tends to lead
AriesMarsBy acting: direct, quick, at its best with a challenge.
TaurusVenusBy building and enjoying: steady, with a sense for quality.
GeminiMercuryBy asking and connecting: curious, talkative, quick to learn.
CancerMoonBy feeling and caring: alert to moods, protective.
LeoSunBy expressing: warm, visible, eager to create.
VirgoMercuryBy sorting and improving: observant, practical, exact.
LibraVenusBy relating: tactful, looking for balance.
ScorpioMars (modern: Pluto)By going deep: determined, private, thorough.
SagittariusJupiterBy exploring: optimistic, looking for meaning.
CapricornSaturnBy building over time: responsible, patient.
AquariusSaturn (modern: Uranus)By thinking independently: principled, going its own way.
PiscesJupiter (modern: Neptune)By sensing and imagining: empathic, open.

Three signs have two rulers. The traditional system uses only the Sun, the Moon and the five planets that are easy to see without a telescope. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered later with telescopes and were then assigned to Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio. Many astrologers take the traditional planet as chart ruler and read the modern one as a second voice. Others do it the other way around. It is worth looking at both.

What the sign and house of your chart ruler add

The chart ruler is read in the same way as any planet, only with more weight.

  • Its sign shows the manner: how you go about the things your Rising sign starts.
  • Its house shows the area of life where much of your energy ends up.
  • Its aspects show which other planets have a say. Aspects are certain angles between two planets.

Take Libra rising. The chart ruler is Venus, and Libra rising tends to come across as friendly, tactful and interested in other people. Now compare two charts.

In the first, Venus stands in Scorpio in the second house, the house of money and what you value. Behind the easy manner are strong, private feelings, and a lot of energy goes into security and into what is truly worth having.

In the second, Venus stands in Leo in the eleventh house, the house of friends, groups and hopes. Here the friendliness is warm and generous, and much of life plays out among friends and in shared projects.

Both people have the same Rising sign, and they still lead different lives. This is the main reason why descriptions of a Rising sign fit some people well and others only halfway.

The Rising sign is the door you walk through. The chart ruler shows where the path behind it leads.

Special cases worth knowing

  • Leo rising. The Sun is your chart ruler, so your Sun sign and the house of your Sun carry double weight.
  • Cancer rising. The Moon is your chart ruler, and your Moon sign moves to the center of the reading.
  • Gemini or Virgo rising. Mercury is your chart ruler. Seen from Earth, Mercury is never more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, so your chart ruler stands in your Sun sign or in a neighboring sign.
  • Chart ruler in the first house. The planet stands in the same part of the chart as the Rising sign. Astrologers read it as especially visible in the way you come across.
  • Born near a change of Rising sign. The Rising point moves about one degree every four minutes. If yours lies at the very start or end of a sign, a small error in the birth time changes the Rising sign and with it the chart ruler. Here it pays to check how to find your birth time.
  • No birth time. Without a birth time there is no Rising sign and no chart ruler. The signs of your planets can still be read.

The chart ruler is also one of the main clues astrologers use when they look for a dominant planet, the planet with the most weight in a chart.

What to do with your chart ruler

  1. Find your Rising sign and look up its ruler in the table.
  2. Note the sign and the house of that planet in your chart.
  3. Put it into one sentence: you meet the world in the style of your Rising sign, you go about it in the manner of the ruler's sign, and it leads you into the area of life of the ruler's house.

Then ask where you recognize this path in your own life, and where you do not. Astrology describes tendencies, and you know your life better than any chart.

Questions, answered

How do I find my chart ruler?

Find your Rising sign from your date, time and place of birth, then look up the planet that rules that sign. With Gemini rising it is Mercury, with Capricorn rising it is Saturn. Then find that planet in your chart and note its sign and house.

Is the chart ruler the same as my ruling planet?

Often not. Many people call the ruler of their Sun sign their ruling planet. The chart ruler is the planet that rules the Rising sign, so a Leo with Capricorn rising has Saturn as chart ruler, not the Sun.

Which planet is the chart ruler for Scorpio, Aquarius or Pisces rising?

These three signs have a traditional and a modern ruler: Mars and Pluto for Scorpio, Saturn and Uranus for Aquarius, Jupiter and Neptune for Pisces. Many astrologers take the traditional planet as chart ruler and read the modern one alongside it.

Can I find my chart ruler without a birth time?

No. The chart ruler depends on the Rising sign, and the Rising sign needs the birth time. The signs of your planets can still be calculated from the date alone.
