In short
- Black Moon Lilith is not a planet or a moon but a calculated point: the lunar apogee, where the Moon's orbit is farthest from Earth.
- In a birth chart it is read as the part of you that insists on its independence, says no and does not adapt in order to be liked.
- Lilith needs about 8.85 years for the zodiac and stays about nine months in each sign.
- The sign shows what you say no to, and the house shows the area of life where you hold your ground.

Black Moon Lilith is not a planet and not a moon. It is a calculated point: the lunar apogee, the place where the Moon's orbit is farthest from Earth. In a birth chart, astrologers read it as the part of you that does not adapt in order to be liked: where you insist on your independence and where you say no.
What Black Moon Lilith is astronomically
The Moon's orbit around the Earth is not a perfect circle. It is a slightly stretched ellipse, so the Moon's distance changes. Once per orbit the Moon is closest to Earth, at a point called the perigee. Once it is farthest away, at the apogee. Black Moon Lilith is the direction of that farthest point, seen from Earth and marked on the zodiac.
Nothing is there: no rock, no light. Lilith is a point, in the same way the Rising point and the lunar nodes are points and not bodies.
The ellipse itself turns slowly. The apogee travels through the whole zodiac in about 8.85 years, about nine months per sign. So you share your Lilith sign with everyone born within a few months of you, and Lilith comes back to its birth position about every nine years.
Two things it is easily confused with:
- The "black moon" of the calendar, a popular nickname for an extra New Moon within one month.
- An asteroid that is also named Lilith. When astrologers say Lilith and add nothing, they almost always mean the Black Moon.
What Lilith is read as in a birth chart
The name comes from an old legend about a woman who would not take second place and left rather than give in. Astrologers keep to the core of that image: autonomy.
- Where you say no. The line you do not let other people move.
- What you do not trade for approval. The part of you that stays the same whether people like it or not.
- Where you have been called too much. Too loud, too stubborn, too independent, too direct. Many people learn early to tone this part down.
Lilith is not a dark side and nothing to be afraid of. It is read as honest and unpolished. Astrologers describe two ways it can go off balance. Swallowed, you say yes while meaning no and resent it afterward. Overdone, you say no on principle. Between the two lies what most people are looking for: a calm, clear no.
It helps to read Lilith next to the Moon. The Moon stands for what you need to feel safe and for how you adapt to get it. Lilith, a point on the Moon's own orbit, is read as the counterpart. What your Moon sign means
The Moon shows what you need to feel safe. Lilith shows where you will not bend to get it.
Lilith in the twelve signs
| Lilith in | What this Lilith says no to |
|---|---|
| Aries | Waiting and being held back. It acts on its own impulse and resists having to ask first. |
| Taurus | Being rushed or bought. It keeps its own pace and decides for itself what has worth. |
| Gemini | Being silenced. It says the uncomfortable thing out loud. |
| Cancer | The family role it was handed. It defines care and home on its own terms. |
| Leo | Dimming itself. It does not apologize for being visible. |
| Virgo | Being useful on demand. It sets its own standards. |
| Libra | Peace at any price. It stops pleasing when fairness is missing. |
| Scorpio | Being controlled. It guards its privacy and gives trust on its own terms. |
| Sagittarius | Borrowed beliefs. It needs the freedom to go, to think and to doubt. |
| Capricorn | Someone else's ladder. It defines success itself and questions unearned authority. |
| Aquarius | Fitting in. It resists group pressure, even from its own group. |
| Pisces | Being pinned down. It protects its inner world and owes nobody an explanation. |
Read these as tendencies, not as rules. How Lilith shows depends on the rest of your chart.

Houses are the twelve sections of a chart, each linked to an area of life. They begin at the Rising point, the degree of your Rising sign (also called the Ascendant), so they need your birth time. Astrologers read the house of Lilith as the area where you insist on your own terms:
- 1st house: in how you present yourself.
- 2nd house: in what you value and what your work is worth to you.
- 3rd house: in what you say and how plainly you say it.
- 4th house: in your family and the way you live at home.
- 5th house: in what you create, enjoy and fall for.
- 6th house: in your daily work and routines.
- 7th house: in partnership, where you insist on equal footing.
- 8th house: in closeness and in what you share with others.
- 9th house: in your beliefs and in what you are taught.
- 10th house: in your career and toward authority.
- 11th house: in groups and friendships.
- 12th house: in private, as a need for time alone that you defend.
Lilith in Libra in the sixth house, for example, could be someone who is easygoing with friends and stops accommodating at work the moment the workload is no longer fair. What the twelve houses mean
Why two calculators can show different Lilith signs
There are two common ways to calculate Lilith. Mean Lilith is an averaged position that moves smoothly. True Lilith, also called osculating Lilith, follows the apogee of the Moon's orbit as it is at the given moment. The Sun's pull constantly distorts that orbit, so the true position swings back and forth around the mean one. The two can lie many degrees apart, sometimes in neighboring signs.
Neither is a mistake. They are two ways of pinning down a point that is not a physical object. If two sources disagree, check which Lilith each one uses. Mean Lilith is the more widely used.
For the same reason, treat Lilith as a fine detail of a chart and not as its foundation.
What to do with your Lilith
- Find Lilith's sign and house in a calculated birth chart.
- Read the two lines that apply to you. Ask where you say yes when you mean no, and where you were told you are too much.
- Put it next to your Moon sign. Compare what you need with where you will not adapt.
The basis is your chart as a whole. A Birth Chart Reading describes it, calculated from your exact birth data and written for your chart.
Questions, answered
What is Black Moon Lilith in astrology?
Black Moon Lilith is the lunar apogee, the point of the Moon's orbit farthest from Earth, marked on the zodiac. Astrologers read it as the part of you that insists on its independence and says no.
Is Lilith a planet?
No. Black Moon Lilith is a calculated point, not a body. There is nothing to see in the sky at that spot. It is a point in the same way the Rising point and the lunar nodes are points.
How do I find my Lilith sign?
You need a calculated chart for your date of birth. Lilith stays about nine months in each sign, so the birth time only matters near a change of sign. The house of Lilith needs your birth time.
Why do two websites show different Lilith signs for me?
There are two ways to calculate it, called mean Lilith and true Lilith. They can lie many degrees apart, sometimes in neighboring signs. Check which one each source uses.
