Scorpio is the eighth sign of the zodiac: the Sun is in Scorpio from around October 23 to around November 21 or 22. It is a water sign and a fixed sign, ruled by Mars in traditional astrology and by Pluto in modern astrology. At its core, Scorpio describes a deep, concentrated way of feeling: it wants the whole truth, and it commits fully or not at all.

In everyday speech, a Scorpio is someone whose Sun stood in Scorpio on the day they were born. That Sun sign is one part of a birth chart, the map of the whole sky at that moment. It is not the whole chart. What follows describes tendencies, nothing more.

Scorpio traits: strengths and growth edges

Its element is water: water signs are read through feeling, and through what is sensed before it is said. Its mode is fixed: fixed signs hold on. Fixed water is a deep lake, not a river. The surface is calm and tells you little about how far down it goes.

Its ruler, the planet linked to the sign, is Mars, the planet of drive and will. In Aries, Mars acts at once. In Scorpio the same force waits, watches and then commits. Modern astrology adds Pluto, which is read as change that goes to the root.

Scorpio's reputation is darker than the sign. In daily life a Scorpio is often the quietest person at the table. Its intensity is concentration, not drama.

Scorpio at its best

  • Depth. Scorpio asks the second question. "Fine" is not an answer it accepts from people it cares about.
  • Honesty under pressure. It stays in a hard conversation, which is why people tell Scorpio things they tell nobody else.
  • Loyalty. A secret told to a Scorpio at school tends to be safe decades later.
  • Perception. It notices the pause before the answer and the thing that was left out.

Where Scorpio struggles

  • Slow trust. People are watched, and sometimes quietly tested, before they are let in.
  • All or nothing. Half measures feel false, so one disappointment can end what one conversation could have repaired.
  • A long memory. Scorpio forgives slowly and forgets rarely.
  • Showing need. "That hurt" and "I need you" expose exactly what Scorpio protects.

Scorpio is not secretive, it is selective: its trust comes slowly, and then it comes whole.

Scorpio in love

Scorpio tends not to do closeness halfway. It looks for a bond in which both people can say everything, and it would rather be alone than together on the surface. Its love shows as presence: it is there in your worst week, it remembers what you said two years ago, and it guards what you confide.

What Scorpio tends to need is honesty, including the uncomfortable kind, and time. Pushing it to open up before it is ready usually has the opposite effect. Its own growth edge is the silent test, the one the partner does not know they are taking, and the retreat in place of the sentence "that hurt me".

Astrologers read some combinations as easier than others:

  • What tends to feel easy: the other water signs, Cancer and Pisces, understand without much explanation. The earth signs Virgo and Capricorn offer the reliability that Scorpio's trust is built on.
  • What takes more translation: air signs keep things light and like some distance, which Scorpio can read as not caring. Fire signs open up fast where Scorpio takes its time. With Leo and Aquarius, also fixed signs, neither side tends to give way first.
  • The opposite sign: Taurus wants things calm and as they are, Scorpio wants to get to the bottom of them. Both are loyal, and each has what the other is still practicing.

None of this is a verdict. How you go after what you want is described more closely by your Mars sign, which can be any of the twelve signs, whatever your Sun sign is.

Scorpio at work

Scorpio does well where a task has depth: research, investigation, auditing, analysis, strategy, negotiation, restoration. It would rather solve one hard problem than ten easy ones, and it is often trusted with confidential matters.

This sign does not need to be visible. It wants influence, autonomy and a boss it can respect, and it reads quickly who really decides in a room. Harder for Scorpio: small talk, shallow tasks and being watched while it works. One pattern is worth watching: keeping what it knows to itself and carrying the whole thing alone.

The Sun changes signs at a specific minute, not at midnight, and the exact day shifts by a day from year to year. Dates are given in Universal Time and can differ by a day depending on where you live. If you were born on October 22 or 23, or on November 21 or 22, your birth time decides whether your Sun is in Scorpio. More in zodiac sign dates and what a cusp birthday really means.

Why two Scorpios can be so different

Scorpio is one of twelve Sun signs. On top of it come twelve possible Moon signs, because the Moon changes sign about every two and a half days, and twelve possible Rising signs, because the Rising sign changes about every two hours.

  • The Moon sign describes your feelings and what you need to feel safe. What your Moon sign means
  • The Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. It describes how you come across. How to find your Rising sign

Take a Scorpio with the Moon in Gemini and Sagittarius rising. This person is talkative, funny and open with strangers. The Scorpio part shows in the one subject they never joke about, and in how few people really know them.

That is how a Scorpio can be the liveliest guest at dinner and still the one who told you nothing about themselves all evening.

What to do next with your Scorpio Sun

  1. Find your Moon sign and your Rising sign. For the Rising sign you need your birth time and place.
  2. Go back to the two lists above and mark what fits and what does not. The lines that do not fit usually point to another part of your chart.

Questions, answered

What are the dates for Scorpio?

The Sun is in Scorpio from around October 23 to around November 21 or 22. The exact day shifts by a day from year to year, so someone born on a changeover day needs the birth time to be sure.

What element and ruling planet does Scorpio have?

Scorpio is a water sign and a fixed sign. Its traditional ruler is Mars, and modern astrology names Pluto as its ruler.

Why do Scorpios have such an intense reputation?

Scorpio is read as a sign that feels deeply, commits fully and shares little until it trusts. From outside that can look intense or mysterious. In daily life it often shows as a quiet, loyal person who takes things seriously.

Which signs get along well with Scorpio?

Astrologers read the water signs Cancer and Pisces and the earth signs Virgo and Capricorn as an easy fit for Scorpio's need for depth and reliability. That is a first hint, not a verdict: how two people get along is read from two whole charts, and the two people decide the rest.
