The 8th house in astrology: what you share
The eighth house describes what happens when two lives are joined: closeness, trust, shared resources and the changes that come with them.

In short
- The eighth house is the area of a birth chart that stands for what you share at depth: intimacy, trust, joint resources and change.
- It lies exactly opposite the second house. The second is read as what is yours, the eighth as what you share with others.
- The sign on its cusp describes how you approach trust and sharing, and planets in the house show which parts of you look for depth.
- It is not a bad house and it predicts nothing. An empty eighth house is common and does not mean a lack of closeness.

The eighth house in astrology is the area of a birth chart that stands for what you share with another person at depth: intimacy, trust, joint resources and the changes that come from letting someone in. It describes how you handle closeness and dependence, and how you let go of what is finished. It is not a house of bad news, and it predicts nothing.
What the eighth house covers
The houses are twelve sections of a birth chart, each linked to an area of life. They are counted from the Rising point (also called the Ascendant), the degree of the zodiac that was coming up in the east when you were born. The sign it lies in is your Rising sign. The basics are in the twelve houses explained.
The seventh house is the partnership itself. The eighth is what a partnership sets in motion: once two people stay together, things get shared. Astrologers place five themes in it.
- Intimacy. Closeness beyond the polite surface: letting someone see what you usually keep to yourself.
- Trust. How easily you rely on someone, and what you need before you do.
- Shared resources. Joint money and property, what you owe and are owed.
- Change. Chapters that end and begin: letting go of an old role, a habit, an earlier version of yourself.
- What lies under the surface. An interest in motives, in what is left unsaid, in how things really work.
Each of them asks you to give up a little control. You cannot share closely and stay fully in charge.
Is the eighth house a bad house?
No. The eighth house has a heavy reputation, and some descriptions of it sound dramatic. There is no reason for alarm. A birth chart describes tendencies. It does not predict a loss or any other event.
The themes of this house can feel demanding because they involve being open with someone, not because something bad is waiting. Planets in the eighth house are read as a wish for depth.
Mine and ours: the second and the eighth house
The eighth house lies exactly opposite the second. The second house stands for what you earn, own and value yourself. The eighth stands for what is held together with others. Astrologers read the two as one axis. What the second house means
The second house is what is yours. The eighth house is what happens when you share it.
The sign on the eighth house cusp
The cusp is the border where a house begins, and the sign on it colors the whole house. The sign on the eighth house cusp is always the sign opposite the one on your second house cusp. In the Whole Sign system, where every house is exactly one sign, it is the eighth sign counted from your Rising sign: Scorpio for Aries rising, for example.
| Sign on the cusp | How you approach trust and sharing |
|---|---|
| Aries | Head-on: you would rather face a difficult matter than wait, and you guard your independence. |
| Taurus | Slowly: trust grows through reliability over time, and you want stable arrangements. |
| Gemini | By talking: you need to put things into words and ask questions before you open up. |
| Cancer | Protectively: closeness means feeling safe, and you share fully with those you count as family. |
| Leo | Wholeheartedly: you give generously and expect loyalty and respect in return. |
| Virgo | Carefully: you look at the details, keep shared matters in order and open up step by step. |
| Libra | Fairly: sharing has to be balanced, and you look for agreements both sides can live with. |
| Scorpio | All the way: you want full honesty, sense what is unspoken and do not share lightly. |
| Sagittarius | Openly: you trust easily, speak frankly and need room even in close bonds. |
| Capricorn | Responsibly: you take obligations seriously and trust what has proved itself. |
| Aquarius | On equal terms: you keep some distance and want room for unusual arrangements. |
| Pisces | Without firm borders: you merge easily, give a lot and do well with clear agreements. |
Read these as tendencies, not as rules.

A planet in the eighth house means that this part of you looks for depth. Astrology counts ten planets, the Sun and the Moon among them.
- Sun: you are drawn below the surface and grow through experiences of trust and change.
- Moon: you feel safe only where closeness is real, and you sense undercurrents quickly.
- Mercury: a mind that digs: research, questions, an ear for what is left unsaid.
- Venus: love means depth and loyalty. A few close bonds matter more than many light ones.
- Mars: energy goes into getting to the bottom of things, with a strong will in shared matters.
- Jupiter: trust comes easily. It is read as confidence in times of change, not as a promise of gain.
- Saturn: caution with closeness and joint commitments. Trust is built slowly and then holds.
- Uranus, Neptune, Pluto: read here as a need for independence in close bonds, a longing to merge, or a strong wish for depth.
One detail you can check against your own birth: the eighth house lies above the horizon, in the western half of the sky. People with the Sun in the eighth house were usually born in the afternoon.
Shared money and obligations are practical matters. A chart describes your attitude to them. It is no basis for financial or legal decisions.
What an empty eighth house means
It does not mean a life without closeness or trust. A chart has ten planets and twelve houses, so every chart has empty houses. More on this in how to read empty houses.
To read an empty eighth house, start with the sign on the cusp. Then find its ruler, the planet linked to that sign. Where the ruler stands is where the story continues.
Take Virgo on the cusp. Its ruler is Mercury. With Mercury in the seventh house, the house of partnership, astrologers read trust as something built by talking things through with a partner.
What to do next with your eighth house
- Check your birth time, because the house borders shift within minutes.
- Find the sign on the cusp and read its line in the table. Ask where you recognize it in how you let people in.
- Note any planets in the house. If it is empty, find the ruler of the cusp sign.
- Then ask the questions behind the house: what do I need in order to trust, and what am I ready to let go of?
