Career houses in astrology: the 2nd, 6th and 10th
Three houses describe work in a birth chart: what it gives you, what you do all day and what you become known for. The Midheaven adds the direction.

In short
- Astrologers read work from three houses: the second (income and what you value), the sixth (daily tasks and routines) and the tenth (career and public role).
- The Midheaven is the highest point of the chart. In many house systems it is the start of the tenth house and shows the direction of your work.
- With Whole Sign houses the three work houses always fall in signs of the same element, which describes your basic approach to work.
- The houses describe how you tend to work. They do not name a job, and they promise neither income nor success.

In astrology, work is read from three houses of the birth chart: the second house (what you earn and what your work is worth to you), the sixth house (your daily tasks and routines) and the tenth house (your career and public role). The Midheaven, the highest point of the chart, adds the direction. Together they describe how you tend to work, not which job you will have or how far you will get.
The three work houses at a glance
The houses are twelve sections of a birth chart, each linked to an area of life. They are counted from the Rising point (also called the Ascendant), the degree of the zodiac that was coming up in the east when you were born. The sign it lies in is your Rising sign. The basics are in the twelve houses explained.
| House | What it covers | The question behind it |
|---|---|---|
| 2nd | Your own income, your skills, what you value | What does my work give me? |
| 6th | Daily tasks, routines, colleagues, health habits | What do I do all day? |
| 10th | Career, public role, reputation | What do I want to be known for? |
Most people look only at the tenth house when they ask about their career. That leaves out the largest part. A working life is spent mostly in the sixth house, in ordinary days, and it has to pay off in the second.
The tenth house is where you are heading. The sixth is what you do on the way. The second is what makes it worth it.
Why these three houses belong together
The second, sixth and tenth houses lie four houses apart. On the chart wheel they form a triangle.
You can check the consequence in your own chart. In the Whole Sign system, where every house is exactly one sign, the three work houses always fall in signs of the same element: fire, earth, air or water.
| Rising sign | 2nd house | 6th house | 10th house | Element |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Taurus | Virgo | Capricorn | earth |
| Taurus | Gemini | Libra | Aquarius | air |
| Gemini | Cancer | Scorpio | Pisces | water |
| Cancer | Leo | Sagittarius | Aries | fire |
| Leo | Virgo | Capricorn | Taurus | earth |
| Virgo | Libra | Aquarius | Gemini | air |
| Libra | Scorpio | Pisces | Cancer | water |
| Scorpio | Sagittarius | Aries | Leo | fire |
| Sagittarius | Capricorn | Taurus | Virgo | earth |
| Capricorn | Aquarius | Gemini | Libra | air |
| Aquarius | Pisces | Cancer | Scorpio | water |
| Pisces | Aries | Leo | Sagittarius | fire |
Astrologers read the shared element as your basic approach to work.
- Earth: practical. You want tangible results, a craft and reliability.
- Air: through ideas, words and people. You want exchange and room to think.
- Water: with feeling. You want work that means something and people you trust.
- Fire: with enthusiasm. You want to start things, to be seen and to believe in what you do.
In house systems with houses of unequal size, such as Placidus, a cusp, the border where a house begins, can fall in a different sign. Check your own chart before you rely on the table.

The second house: what work gives you
The second house stands for the income you earn yourself, the skills you can rely on and your sense of your own worth. The sign on its cusp describes your attitude to earning: patient, quick, cautious, generous. Saturn in the second house is read as someone who builds slowly and ties worth to effort. What the second house means
The sixth house: what you do all day
The sixth house stands for tasks, routines, the way you organize a day and the people you work beside. Mars in the sixth house is read as a need for fast or physical tasks and impatience with slow routines. The Moon there is read as a mood that depends on the rhythm of the working day.
The tenth house and the Midheaven: what you become known for
The tenth house stands for career, public role and reputation. Mercury there is read as someone known for words, knowledge or mediation.
The Midheaven (MC) is the point of the zodiac that was highest in the sky at your birth. In Placidus and many other house systems it is the start of the tenth house. With Whole Sign houses the tenth house is the tenth sign counted from your Rising sign, and the Midheaven is a separate point that can fall in a neighboring house. Then astrologers read both. What your Midheaven sign says about your career
Empty work houses
An empty second, sixth or tenth house is common and says nothing against a career. A chart has ten planets, the Sun and the Moon among them, and twelve houses, so every chart has empty houses. More on this in how to read empty houses.
To read an empty house, start with the sign on its cusp. Then find its ruler, the planet linked to that sign. Take Capricorn on the tenth house cusp. Its ruler is Saturn. With Saturn in the third house, the house of communication, astrologers read a public role built patiently through writing, teaching or explaining.
What the work houses cannot tell you
They do not name a job. Two people with the same three houses can work in very different fields. What they share is a way of working.
They also make no promises. No placement means a high income, a promotion or success, and none stands in the way of them. A chart is a tool for self-reflection. It is no basis for decisions about a job, a business or money.
What the three houses can do is give you words for something you have noticed. A role that looks right from the outside and feels wrong day to day is, in this language, a tenth house that fits and a sixth that does not.
How to read your own work houses
- Check your birth time. The Midheaven and the house borders move about one degree every four minutes.
- Note the signs on the cusps of your second, sixth and tenth houses, and the element they share, if they do.
- Note the planets in the three houses. Where a house is empty, find the ruler of its cusp sign.
- Ask the three questions from the table. Where your answers pull apart is the place worth thinking about.

Questions, answered
Which house shows career in astrology?
The tenth house stands for career and public role. Astrologers read it together with the sixth house, which stands for daily work, and the second house, which stands for income and what your work is worth to you.
What is the difference between the 6th and the 10th house?
The sixth house describes what you do all day: tasks, routines and working conditions. The tenth house describes what you become known for: your career, your public role and your reputation.
Is the Midheaven the same as the 10th house?
Not quite. The Midheaven is a single point, the highest point of the zodiac at your birth. In many house systems it marks the start of the tenth house. With Whole Sign houses it can fall in a neighboring house.
Does an empty 10th house mean I will have no career?
No. Every chart has empty houses, because there are ten planets and twelve houses. You read an empty tenth house through the sign on its cusp, the planet that rules that sign and the Midheaven.
